NZ vs SL Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Nov 09, 2023

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will contest the 41st match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The Black Caps and Sri Lankans currently occupy fourth and eighth position, respectively, in the 10-team tournament's standings.

The New Zealanders are still trying to qualify for the semi-final stage of the competition, while Sri Lanka have been removed from contention.

Let's see what the cricket odds and betting markets have in store for this key World Cup fixture in Bengaluru, India.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka head-to-head record

New Zealand have won nine of their last 10 completed ODIs against Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankans have not beaten the Kiwis in this format of the international game since 2015. Overall, New Zealand have beaten Sri Lanka 51 times in ODI cricket - and Sri Lanka have beaten New Zealand on 41 occasions.

NZ vs SL Team Previews

New Zealand

New Zealand's Cricket World Cup campaign started convincingly with four consecutive wins over England, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. But they have since slipped to four successive defeats to India, Australia, South Africa and Pakistan.

All-rounders Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell have emerged as New Zealand's leading run-scorers at this tournament. Ravindra has 523 runs in eight innings to Mitchell's 347 in seven. The return of captain Kane Williamson from injury has come as a timely boost for the XI, too.

Bowling-wise, spinner Mitchell Santner is the country's leading wicket-taker at this tournament with 14 in eight matches. New Zealand have lost fast bowler Matt Henry to injury for the rest of the competition. It will be interesting to see if replacement player Kyle Jamieson slots into the XI immediately.

New Zealand have never won the Cricket World Cup. They lost finals in 2015 and 2019. Defeat to Sri Lanka here would almost certainly end their push for a semi-final berth. They were among the title favourites a few weeks ago, but are now struggling to remain in the running.

Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tom Latham, Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka strung together successive wins over England and Netherlands before losing to Afghanistan, India and Bangladesh in a row. They will not reach the 2023 Cricket World Cup semi-finals, but can still qualify for the next Champions Trophy by finishing among the top seven teams in India.

The Sri Lankan squad has been limited by injuries to key personnel Lahiru Kumara, Dasun Shanaka and Matheesha Pathirana. The depth of the XI has since been exposed, as the replacement players haven't necessarily performed well in the absence of the injured first-choice players.

The in-form Sadeera Samarawickrama and Pathum Nissanka continue to lead Sri Lanka's batting charges with 372 and 330 tournament runs, respectively. The hard-hitting Charith Asalanka and Kusal Mendis are nearing 300 runs each in the competition, too.

Fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka has been superb this World Cup en route to 21 wickets in eight matches. He is arguably one of the best left-arm seamers on display in India this month. His last three ODIs have yielded 10 wickets, including a five-for against India.

Sri Lanka Playing 11

Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka.

NZ vs SL Toss Prediction

Four of the last six ODIs in Bengaluru have been won by the team batting first. Two of those four were at this World Cup. The team to win the toss in this match will likely opt to bat first, too, but assess the weather first.

It's worth noting that Sri Lanka beat England at his venue earlier this tournament, when the English chose to bat first. New Zealand played Pakistan here less than a week ago, lost the toss, batted first - and lost a match shortened by rain.

Pitch and Conditions

The last three first-innings ODI totals at this ground have been 156, 367 and 401. Teams have only been bowled out twice in the last six ODI innings here.

Saturday's ODI between New Zealand and Pakistan produced 601 runs in 75.3 overs before rain had the final say. This is a high-scoring venue. It's well worth playing two specialist spinners here to vary the pace on the bat.

Unfortunately, there is more rain forecast for Bengaluru the day before and the day of the match. We'll probably have another shortened match. This, again, can suit the team batting second.

NZ vs SL Betting Tips

New Zealand have lost their last four ODIs. Sri Lanka have lost their last three ODIs. Neither team have momentum. One of them can find some here. It will probably be New Zealand, who have a penchant for succeeding when it matters most at major tournaments.

The Black Caps are priced as 1.25 favourites against 4.33 underdogs Sri Lanka to win this match.
