KKR vs LSG Match Prediction - May 20, 2023

The Kolkata Knight Riders will be looking to play for pride as they host the Lucknow Super Giants for their final match of the season this Saturday. KKR may be out of the playoff race (improbable mathematical possibilities aside) but LSG is in an excellent position to qualify and perhaps make the top-2 of IPL 2023 as well.

KKR vs LSG head-to-head record

This will be the first time that the two teams will be facing off against each other this season. Before this, there have been 2 head-to-head contests between the two and both have been won by the Lucknow Super Giants.

KKR vs LSG Team Previews

Kolkata Knight Riders

It was a valiant effort by the Kolkata Knight Riders this season as despite missing some of their key players, they remained in the fray for the playoffs till almost the last moment. But some poor performances by them in the middle order meant that they had to depend on the results for other teams’ matches as well.

But now, with just this last match in their hand, it is practically impossible for KKR to finish in the top 4.

There have been some excellent performers in this relatively young line-up of the Knight Riders. Skipper Nitesh Rana has led from the front, scoring 3 half-centuries and a total of 305 runs. He is the second-highest run-scorer for the team this season.

His tally is bettered only by Rinku Singh, who is undoubtedly the find of the season for them. He proved in the previous match that he is not just a smasher at the end but can also play on tough wickets and anchor a chase. Venkatesh Iyer and Jason Roy have chipped in at times but have lacked consistency. Some of the international players have been a bit disappointing too. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine bring a lot of T20 experience with them but they have failed to deliver the goods here.

KKR may need to move beyond these names in the next season.

Varun Chakaravarthy has been the standout performer with the ball so far. He has picked up 19 wickets and is the leading wicket-taker for the team. Suyash Sharma is another good find and will play an important role in the upcoming seasons.

The seamers haven’t been up to the task and that has been one of the main causes for the team's lackluster performance. Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur, and Andre Russell have all struggled to pick up wickets.

Lucknow Super Giants

The Lucknow Super Giants haven’t been the most consistent this season. But they have done enough to remain in the hunt for the playoffs. A win against the Mumbai Indians in their latest fixture has greatly improved their chances of finishing in the top 4. While a win here will guarantee them a spot, if they lose here, they will have to depend on the result of the other teams.

The team will depend on Quinton de Kock to give them a good start here. He will either be joined by Kyle Mayers or Deepak Hooda at the top of the order. While the former has been in good form, the latter has struggled to score runs.

LSG picks players for particular conditions and so we think Mayers may find himself back in the team for this match.

The Lucknow Super Giants have two excellent batsmen in the middle order. Marcus Stoinis is the leading run-scorer for the team with 368 runs. Nicholas Pooran is an excellent finisher, capable of scoring some quick runs at the end. Both of these players are having their best IPL season ever and have contributed massively to LSG's success.

However, the other batsmen haven’t been very consistent. Krunal Pandya, Prerak Mankad, and Ayush Badoni have played well in patches but they will need to step up their game here.

Ravi Bishnoi has been the prime bowler for the team with 14 wickets.

The Super Giants have plenty of options in the seam department, as Yash Thakur, Naveen ul-Haq, and Mohsin Khan have been decent with the ball. Mohsin bowled a brilliant last over in the last match, defending 10 runs, and was instrumental in helping his team win here. In all, the Super Giants have a good opportunity to win here.

LSG has the players it needs to be able to attack KKR and it also has the motivation to win. We think this is going to be a tough team to stop.

KKR vs LSG Toss Prediction

Each of the last 3 matches played here has been won while chasing. We, therefore, think that the winner of the toss will opt to bowl first.

Pitch and Conditions

The Eden Gardens is known to produce good batting surfaces and this year appears no different. The pitch is dry and flat with very little grass on it. The average first-inning score here this season is around 195. The seamers will struggle here and will have to be very disciplined with their line and length.

There is a bit of slowness in the pitch and the dry surface will offer assistance to the spinners. The weather is likely to be warm and humid with overcast conditions and we might see some rain here.

KKR vs LSG Betting Tips

While the Kolkata Knight Riders do not have a chance of making it through, we still expect them to give a good fight here. But it is the Lucknow Super Giants who have the upper hand here. They have a strong batting line-up and a good bowling unit that has shown that they can perform well even under pressure situations.

The Lucknow Super Giants have some explosive batsmen in the top and middle order, who are capable of scoring runs at a brisk pace. As they play on a good batting surface, we expect them to put up a big score in the first 10 overs. Quinton de Kock and Kyle Mayers could open the batting for LSG in this match and make an absolute mockery of this Over/Under line.

The Eden Gardens offers an excellent batting surface where the ball comes on nicely to the bat and it is easy to play the big shots. Both teams have some big strikers of the ball and we are likely to see plenty of 6s here. So far, in IPL 2023, a six has been hit every 12 balls at the Eden Gardens. That is an average of 20 sixes per match!
