JT vs GAW Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Aug 27, 2023

Guyana Amazon Warriors and Jamaica Tallawahs will contest the 11th match of the 2023 Caribbean Premier League. The Tallawahs currently occupy first position in the six-team CPL standings, while the Warriors are in third position.

Jamaica can build on recent victory over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Guyana want to add to victory against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots earlier this week.

This fixture will showcase plenty of local talent from around West Indies and international stars from overseas. Let's see what the cricket betting odds have in store.

Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Jamaica Tallawahs head-to-head record

The Amazon Warriors have won three of their last five matches against the Tallawahs. Jamaica's two victories, though, have come in the last three matches.

Guyana won both meetings in 2021. The Warriors and Jamaica won one each in 2022 before meeting in Qualifier 2, which the Tallawahs clinched.

Jamaica Tallawahs

The Tallawahs are the reigning champions and their pursuit of a successful title defence and record-equalling fourth title overall is off to a promising start. Jamaica have beaten St Lucia Kings and the Patriots - and shared a wash out with Barbados Royals - this season.

Opener Brandon King was the leading run-scorer in the 2022 CPL and is an early contender for the same achievement this season. King followed 81 against the Kings with 67 against the Patriots and this could be his cue to continue a fine stretch of form.

The Kings should not develop and overreliance on King for runs, though. Fellow opener Kirk Mckenzie, number three batter Shamarh Brooks and wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo need to ensure King gets the support required to keep pushing Jamaica to competitive first-innings totals or successful chases.

The Tallawahs currently have three of the top 10 wicket-takers in the 2023 CPL so far. Seamer Salman Irshad should be full of confidence after taking a match-winning four-wicket haul against the Patriots. He'll likely be given the new ball again, which he can share with Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir or spinner Imad Wasim.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

Guyana are still in pursuit of a maiden CPL title. They have lost five finals. Perhaps this will be their year to finally get the proverbial monkey off their back. Their opening victory of the 2023 CPL over the Partiots again showed the five-time runners-up are more than capable of going all the way.

With South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir captaining the XI rather than local leaders Shimron Hetmyer or Shai Hope, the West Indian batters are all but freed to concentrate solely on their primary role with the willow. Hope top-scored with 54 against the Patriots and there is evidently momentum to build on.

Guyana lost three wickets inside the opening powerplay against St Kitts and Nevis, but had enough batting depth to push them to a final score of 197 for seven. The bowlers then ensured that was a triumphant total by limiting the opposition's reply to 132 all out. Tahir and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie shared six wickets.

The success of Motie and Tahir might see them bowl earlier this time - and in tandem for a brief burst. Left-arm finger spin complementing right-arm wrist spin can make for a threatening combination, especially against an opposition order eager to have pace coming onto the bat.

JT vs GAW Toss Prediction

The first four matches during the Basseterre leg of the 2022 CPL saw the toss-winning captain opt to bowl first. The same decision was made by the team who won the toss in the first two Warner Park fixtures of this season's CPL. The trend is likely to continue after captains Tahir and King flip the coin here.

The composition of results from the last five meetings between these two teams might sway decisions, though. Four of their last five fixtures have been won by the team batting first. This stretch includes three outings in Basseterre - the venue for this match.

Pitch and Conditions

Little to no rain is predicted across Basseterre on the day of the match. Humidity levels should be characteristically high for the region. Tahir praised Motie for bowling in "wet" conditions after Guyana's win over the Partiots. It'll be interesting if the same pitch is used this time and if, so, whether it's significantly drier.

The Tallawahs will likely open the bowling with a specialist slow bowler again. They've done so with Wasim and fellow spinner Chris Green this season. Tahir, too, might be tempted to give Motie a go with the new ball or at least in the opening powerplay.

JT vs GAW Betting Tips

This is a tough call. The Tallawahs have not lost yet this season, while Guyana have a lot of momentum after oudoing the Patriots recently. What happens at the toss might not have as much of an impact as it has previously either. The Amazon Warriors beat St Kitts and Nevis after losing the toss and the Tallawahs know how to adapt both ways.

If Guyana get King out early and keep a cap on the Jamaica middle order, Hope, Hetmyer and others could have the capacity to get another win here. The result could come down to a battle of spin, too, with Tahir and Motie against Green and Wasim.

You can bet on the Tallawahs at 1.88 to win this match. The Amazon Warriors are priced as the underdogs at 2.00. There are also some interesting markets around who could win the toss and the match to consider.

Imad Wasim to be top Jamaica Tallawahs bowler

Wasim has taken four wickets in the 2023 CPL so far. He is the joint second-highest wicket-taker this season. Bowling with the new ball could be another opportunity for Wasim to snare early wickets while the batters are overly attacking.

Shai Hope to be top Guyana Amazon Warriors batter

Hope was Guyana's top-scorer in their victory over the Patriots and is a good pick to be this again. If he doesn't open the batting, he'll probably arrive at the crease in third position. This should allow him plenty of times to accumulate runs.

Shai Hope to score a 50

Hope is another solid choice to score a half-century. He might follow King's lead and strike back-to-back half-centuries. Hope is not necessarily a big-hitter, but goes about collecting runs at a rapid rate regardless.
