JT vs GAW Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Sep 22, 2023

Jamaica Tallawahs and Guyana Amazon Warriors will contest the 2023 Caribbean Premier League's Qualifier 2 fixture. The Tallawahs beat St Lucia Kings in the Eliminator to get here, while the Amazon Warriors lost to Trinbago Knight Riders in the Qualifier 1.

Jamaica are the defending CPL champions. Guyana have reached the final five times, but never won a title. This match will decide who meets Trinbago in the 2023 final. Let's see what the betting markets and cricket odds have in store for this Qualifier 2.

Jamaica Tallawahs vs Guyana Amazon Warriors head-to-head record

The Amazon Warriors have three wins to the Tallawahs' two in their last five meetings. Guyana won both matches when they played Jamaica earlier in the 2023 CPL. The Tallawahs have not beaten the Warriors since September 2022.

JT vs GAW Team Previews

Jamaica Tallawahs

The Tallawahs remain in pursuit of a successful title defence despite a shaky end to their group stage campaign. They lost five of their last six group matches before beating St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to reach the play-off stage of the tournament from fourth position, ahead of fifth-placed Barbados.

Jamaica have since beaten and later eliminated St Lucia, too, to put their push for a successive title back on track. They were without captain Brandon King for a brief stint, but he returned for the second St Lucia clash and should be available for this one. King was the leading run-scorer in the 2022 CPL overall and started this season well, but has since slipped off the pace.

He is a vital cog at the top of the Tallawahs order and will likely open the batting with England recruit Alex Hales again. Hales is the recent recipient of a CPL century and can capitalise on the momentum collected from that 119 not out against the Kings with another big knock against Guyana.

The Tallawahs have arguably had the most formidable bowling unit this CPL season. They currently have three of the top five wicket-takers in the 2023 CPL. Seamer Mohammad Amir, alongside spinners Imad Wasim and Chris Green, have shared 44 wickets. Wasim is also this CPL season's sixth-highest run-scorer - and statistically the best all-rounder in the tournament.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

The pressure could be tolling on Guyana. They were the only unbeaten team in the 2023 CPL before losing a fixture toward the end of the group stage. They have since been beaten by Trinbago, too. Opportunity knocked to advance directly to the final after ending the group stage at the top of the points table, but now they're fighting to remain in contention for a maiden CPL title - again.

This is a franchise, remember, that has reached five CPL finals, yet are still without a title. That absence of a trophy might be hanging over their heads more than ever. They have a new captain in place, South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir, to potentially inspire their future instead of being beholden to the past.

Importantly, the additional responsibility of the captaincy has not negatively affected Tahir's primary role with the ball. He is Guyana's second-highest wicket-taker this CPL season with 13 in 11 matches. Only fellow South African Dwaine Pretorius has more for Guyana with 14 in 11.

Batting-wise, the Amazon Warriors have the top two run-scorers overall during this year's tournament. Wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope has 409 runs in 11 innings to opener Saim Ayub's 406 in 11. They have shared seven half-centuries, while Hope has graduated to a century as well.

JT vs GAW Toss Prediction

Five of the eight CPL matches played at the Providence Stadium this season have been won by the team batting second. It's probable the captain to win the toss will choose to bowl first. It's not uncommon in the T20 format for teams to want to know their target, regardless the size, and attempt to set the pace of the chase accordingly.

Guyana and Jamaica met at this venue fewer than 10 days ago, when the Amazon Warriors won the toss and chose to bowl first. They limited the Tallawahs to 152 for five - and reached the 153-run target with nine deliveries to spare on the back of Ayub's brisk 85.

Pitch and Conditions

This will be the ninth consecutive match in Providence this CPL season. It is Guyana's homeground, so they could have a better read of conditions than the Tallawahs.

Whether a fresh strip will be used for this match remains in the balance. Regardless, a first-innings total of 180 should be competitive. Two 200-plus first-innings scores have been reached in Providence this season.

Both teams will likely field two specialist spinners - and potentially open the bowling with at least one. Weather-wise, little to no rain is forecast in Providence before and on matchday. We should get a full fixture in here.

JT vs GAW Betting Tips

Jamaica have the more formidable bowling unit. Guyana have a stronger batting department. This really should be a good contest between bat and ball for a berth in the CPL final.

The Tallawahs are in a better position to win this despite being priced as 2.20 underdogs. The Amazon Warriors are offered as 1.72 favourites.

There have been five centurions in the 2023 CPL so far. Two - Hales and Hope - will be involved in this match. This is a relatively high-scoring venue. We might see the sixth century this season in this match.

Ayub has a fraction fewer runs than Jamaica team-mate Hope in this year's CPL. Ayub opens the batting and will have another chance to score quickly during the opening powerplay. He could score more than Hope in this CPL overall, especially if he is their top batter in this match.
