JT vs BR Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Aug 20, 2023

Barbados Royals and Jamaica Tallawahs will contest the fifth match of the 2023 Caribbean Premier League. Jamaica are the reigning champions and recently beat St Lucia Kings. Barbados last won the CPL title in 2019 and lost to St Lucia this week.

It's up to the Royals to bounce back from defeat and the Tallawahs to keep going strongly in their title defence. Let's see what's on offer across multiple betting markets for this match.

Barbados Royals vs Jamaica Tallawahs head-to-head record

The Tallawahs have beaten the Royals in three of their previous five meetings, including both times in their last two contests.

Four of those five matches were won by the team batting second. Interestingly, all three of Jamaica's wins over the Royals came bowling first.

Jamaica Tallawahs

Opener Brandon King and spinner Imad Wasim starred in Jamaica's win over St Lucia in the opening match of the 2023 CPL. Momentum is key in domestic T20 tournaments and the Tallawahs will be keen to see this pair perform well again, especially against opposition smarting from recent defeat to St Lucia.

King was the leading run-scorer in last year's CPL and is an early contender for the same mantle again. Wasim opened the bowling against the Kings and could do so again, or at least be deployed during the powerplay, when batters expecting pace on the ball can be challenged by a slower approach.

Whether the Tallawahs go with an unchanged XI or exchange all-rounder Fabian Allen for a specialist batter or seamer remains in the balance. The spinner was relatively ineffective against the Kings, bowling two expensive overs without taking a wicket.

Barbados Royals

The Royals will be disappointed with their batters and bowlers after losing heavily to St Lucia. Seamer Jason Holder and spinner Qais Ahmad shared six wickets, but lacked support as the opposition totalled 201 for six - the highest score of the Carribean Premier League so far.

Batters Rahkeem Cornwall, Justin Greaves and Rovman Powell all fell for ducks against St Lucia. The collective failure of the top- through middle-order left a lot of pressure on the remainder. This needs to change if they want a prompt turnaround in result against Jamaica.

Barbados were evidently troubled by pace early against the Kings before inability to successfully combat spin capped an all-round poor performance. They will be well challenged against a Tallawahs outfit that is arguably stronger than St Lucia.

JT vs BR Toss Prediction

Six of the last nine CPL matches at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet have been won by the team batting second. The team to win the toss this time will likely choose to bowl first. That said, a risky decision to bat first could buck the trend and challenge the opposition bowlers on a tiring pitch.

This will be the second-last match of the 2023 CPL in Gros Islet before the tournament moves to Basseterre and later Bridgetown, Port of Spain, Tarouba and Providence.

Pitch and Conditions

This isn't necessarily a high-scoring venue, with first-innings scores ranging between 160 and 170, but St Lucia have shown this can be pumped as high as 200-plus.

Expect the Tallawahs to open the bowling with spinner Wasim again. He doesn't turn the ball that much, but it's the additional early bounce and skid off the deck that helps his pursuit of early wickets. Wasim took three wickets in the tournament opener.

The wet weather that has threatened throughout the week hasn't had an affect on the tournament yet. If there is rain, it won't likely be enough to shorten this match.

JT vs BR Betting Tips

The Tallawahs are a good pick to win this match. As the reigning champions and on an unbeaten run, they're the favourites to take this contest. Team momentum is key in T20 cricket. Bet on a Jamaica win at 1.66 or opt for underdogs Barbados at 2.20. If Jamaica get another win here, they'll look good for a successful title defence.

King showed why he was the top run-scorer in the 2022 Caribbean Premier League with a commanding 81 in this season's opening match. He has also been in good form in international cricket with the West Indies. King plays the conditions in St Lucia confidently.

Jason Holder to be top Barbados Royals bowler

Holder took four wickets in Barbados' recent defeat to St Lucia. His tall frame and ability to extract lateral movement off the seam make him a threat. Holder has a masterful slower ball and is obviously the standout seamer in the Royals' bowling attack.

The Pakistani spinner is a big asset for the Tallawahs. He took three wickets in their first match of the 2023 CPL and looks set for another solid showing here. Conditions could play right into his hands again - and he can add valuable runs with the bat.
