Sri Lanka clinched a last-ball thriller on Thursday to set up a date with India for this Sunday’s Finals.
Given the state of Sri Lankan cricket just a year ago, the team has made a remarkable turnaround. The team has been marred by injuries even during the ongoing tournament but has shown remarkable resilience to make it to their 12th Asia Cup finals, which is the most for any team.
While most Sri Lankan players are not household names, they are a quality side who have risen to the occasion to fight against all odds. Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama are in prime form. Mendis scored a brilliant 91 in the last match, his third 50+ knock of the tournament, to keep the hosts in the hunt of a stiff target, and was well supported by Samarawickrama.
However, it was Charith Asalanka, who was the hero of the night as he managed to hold his nerve under the immense pressure and helped his team home at at the very last ball. There are a few things that Sri Lanka will look to iron out before Sunday’s match.
The openers have struggled throughout the tournament and will look to put up a better performance. The batting form of Dasun Shanaka also remains a concern. Matheesha Pathirana has been the pick of the bowlers with 11 wickets but he has often strayed with his line, giving away extras. Maheesh Theekshana picked up an injury during Thursday’s match and updates regarding his availability are awaited.
If he does miss this game, Dunith Wellalage will have a lot of responsibility on his young shoulders.

What is more heartening to see is that rather than depending on the individual excellence of a few players, the team has performed well as a unit. Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill have given the team good starts throughout the series, while Virat Kohli is getting back to his prime form.
With both, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan playing in the team, there is plenty of firepower in the middle order. Kuldeep Yadav has repaid the faith shown in him by the selectors and is the leading wicket-taker for India. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will start the attack with the new ball, while Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja will try and squeeze the runs during the middle overs.
The loss to Bangladesh was a wakeupcall for the team, especially in conditions where the spinners dominate. They struggled against Wellelage in the previous match against Sri Lanka and will have to play to counter him. On a good batting wicket, we think India should be able to overpower Sri Lanka quite easily but on a turning wicket, the contest becomes much closer.
