GLA vs SOM Match Prediction - Jun 21, 2023

Glamorgan has looked simply okay this season in the T20 Blast, but we wonder if they can do better. The team does a good job of dispatching teams below them, but tends to struggle against stronger opponents in their group, such as Essex, Surrey, and indeed Somerset. Glamorgan is currently fifth on the table, with a 5-4 record.

Somerset is looking incredible and is right at the top of the table with an 8-2 record. While they were a bit shaky with two losses recently against Surrey and Hampshire, those are certainly great teams and nothing to frown at.

Glamorgan vs. Somerset will take place at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on June 21st. Take a look at the top betting sites for cricket.

GLA vs SOM Team Previews

Glamorgan

Glamorgan will have to face at least two games without star batter Colin Ingram due to an on-going Achilles injury. He’s not done for the season, thankfully, but his 329 total runs have been invaluable for the team.

Still, Glamorgan has other batting options, like Cooke (339 runs), Northeast (254), and Carlson (233). Cooke had a huge 113* against Middlesex, although he’s scoring in the high 20s for the majority of recent games. Northeast had been batting poorly to start the season, but has been brilliant lately, scoring 76 against Surrey and 60* versus Gloucestershire.

Pacer McIlroy (15/287) and spinner Hatzoglou (11/279) are undoubtedly the only two bowlers really keeping Glamorgan in striking distance of any game. Still, both are incredibly effective in their roles, with McIlroy taking 4/36 against Essex and Hatzoglou picking up 3/23 versus Gloucestershire.

Somerset

Somerset is at the top of the South Group for a good reason, and their players are some of the best in the entire league. They play well as a team and there’s always someone to step up when others fall.

Somerset essentially has four batters that could be the No. 1 option on any other team, as Kohler-Cadmore, Banton, Smeed, and Abell have all been batting incredibly well lately. Kohler-Cadmore (323) and Banton (317) usually get the job done alone, but sometimes it’s a group effort. For the win over Essex, for example, five batsmen scored at least 28 runs or over.

The Somerset batters are doing well, but there’s another reason for the success: Ben Green’s bowling. This guy can do no wrong and is leading the league in wickets-taken, with stats of 22/266 (8.02 ER), which is nothing short of breath-taking for the T20 Blast that’s full of great batters. He’s yet to beat his best performance of 4/20, but it may come soon.

What’s more, the bowling support from Henry (15 wickets) and van der Merwe (13) means that Somerset doesn’t have to stress too much when Green’s four overs are finished.

GLA vs SOM Toss Prediction

It's exceedingly close to call whether to bowl first or bat first in T20 matches played here. In the 58 games that have been played, 27 have been won by batting first, and 29 by batting second. It's still possible that teams like to bowl first so they can assess the pitch.

Pitch and Conditions

Pacers particularly enjoy the Sophia Gardens pitch because it frequently has a lot of bounce and swing. It may very easily be a low-scoring match with an average score of 150, since the new ball will experience a lot of movement and the outfield isn't nearly as quick as other venues.

GLA vs SOM Betting Tips

The Betway odds will be enticing for Glamorgan, but we wouldn’t recommend betting on them right now. With Ingram out for the team and Somerset’s bowling attack stronger than ever, we can’t imagine Glamorgan would set a large total when either batting first or second.

Somerset has won the last four games convincingly, and the entire team is reliable and talented, so we just can’t imagine Glamorgan troubling such an elite team.

    Somerset Top Batter: Tom Banton

The odds for Banton are actually pretty good, considering he's one of the top scorers for the team, and you'll get a better return than Kohler-Cadmore. Banton is very consistent and is averaging 39.62, while making a total of 317 runs. He's had a few scores in the 40s and 50s, but it's time for something higher.

    Glamorgan Top Bowler: Peter Hatzoglou

The odds are better than McIlroy, so it's a good time to bet. He's taken six wickets over his last two games, and is really starting to shine towards the end of the season. His stats overall are 14/324, so if he can keep his ER at a better rate, then he'll certainly be the top bowler in this match.

Somerset Top Bowler: Roelof van der Merwe

Green or Henry is a fine choice, but van der Merwe has really good odds and is a solid player. He's taken 13/206 for the season, but there's a chance he could top his best effort of 3/24. If Green or Henry have bad games, then it's going to be up to van der Merwe to save the game.
