GAW vs JT Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Sep 13, 2023

Guyana Amazon Warriors and Jamaica Tallawahs will contest the 25th match of the 2023 Caribbean Premier League. The Warriors and Tallawahs currently occupy second and fifth position, respectively, in this CPL season's six-team standings.

There are only six matches left before the play-off stage of the tournament starts. Trinbago Knight Riders have already qualified, while Guyana are effectively one win away from doing the same. Let's see what the cricket odds and betting markets have in store for this key CPL fixture.

Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Jamaica Tallawahs head-to-head record

Guyana and Jamaica have taken it in turns to beat each other across their last five meetings. Neither team have strung together successive wins in that period. The Warriors have collected three wins to the Tallawahs' two. Their first meeting in the 2023 CPL brought victory for the Amazon Warriors.

GAW vs JT Team Previews

Guyana Amazon Warriors

Guyana remain the only unbeaten team in this season's CPL. They have won five matches and collected one no-result. They are just two points shy of the table-topping Knight Riders, but have three matches in hand. The Tallawahs will be hard pressed to beat opposition with such a strong recent record.

The Warriors' most recent win was over the Barbados Royals, when opener Saim Ayub and number three batter Shai Hope struck half-centuries. Seamer Dwaine Pretorius and spinner Gudakesh Motie then shone with the ball to seal a tight victory for Guyana.

Ayub is Guyana's leading run-scorer this season with 203 in six innings. Hope is not far behind with 193 in five. The big-hitting Shimron Hetmeyer - and all-rounders Keemo Paul and Romario Shepherd - have been solid in support. This collective effort has made Guyana formidable batting unit this season.

South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir's primary role with the ball has arguably suffered with the additional responsibility of the Guyana captaincy. He hasn't taken many wickets and has proven relatively expensive. Regardless, Motie, Shepherd and Pretorius have done plenty - 24 wickets between them - to make up for Tahir's dip in form.

Jamaica Tallawahs

Jamaica are the reigning champions, but are struggling to put together a successful title defence. They are just one point short of being at the bottom of the points table after losing their last four matches. They're going to have to win this match and their next to have a mathematical chance of remaining in the race for the play-offs.

Their most recent defeat was to Trinbago, who again exposed the recent failings of captain and opener Brandon King. He was the leading run-scorer in last season's CPL, but his last four innings have yielded a mere 46 runs, including three single-figure scores. Jamaica certainly need more from the bat of their leader.

Amid King's struggles, all-rounder Imad Wasim has emerged as Jamaica's leading run-scorer this year. He has collected 196 in five innings, including two half-centuries. Wasim has batted well in conditions which, at times, have played like they do on the sub-continent - low and slow.

Wasim has also been solid with the ball, taking eight wickets to be Jamaica's second most prolific bowler this season. Seamers Salman Irshad and Mohammad Amir have taken nine each. The Tallawahs can lean on their Pakistan trio - and Australian spinner Chris Green - again.

GAW vs JT Toss Prediction

This will be the first match of the 2023 CPL in Providence. The venue hosted 10 completed matches during the 2022 CPL. Seven of those were won by the team batting first. The toss-winning captain, this time, could take his cue from that record and choose to bowl second.

That would be a significantly different approach from most matches played in this year's CPL so far. From Gros Islet and Basseterre to Port of Spain, Bridgetown and Tarouba, most teams have opted to bowl first and chase later. Let's see if the trend changes in Providence.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

This is Guyana's home ground. They should have a better understanding of conditions than Jamaica. Last year's Providence pitches yielded first-innings scores of around 160 and two over 190. A first-innings score of 170-plus here should be competitive.

Much like at other Caribbean venues, it can be worth playing at least two specialist spinners in Guyana - and even open the bowling with one. Rain is predicted the day before the match and on matchday. We could be in for a shortened fixture, which would probably suit the team batting second.

GAW vs JT Betting Tips

Given the advantage of being hosts and not having lost a match in the 2023 CPL so far, Guyana are poised to win this match. They have plenty of momentum. Jamaica have not won a match in almost three weeks. Their pursuit of a successful title defence is all but over.

Guyana are priced as favourites at 1.62. The Tallawahs are the underdogs at 2.35 - these are some of the longest match winner odds we have seen this CPL season and could bring good value if Jamaica manage an upset victory in Guyana.

Wasim's last four CPL scores have been 62, 19 not out, 33 and 63. He is the Tallawahs' top run-scorer this season. He looks a promising selection to be their highest scorer in this match as well.

Dwaine Pretorius to be top Guyana Amazon Warriors bowler

Pretorius retired from international cricket earlier this year. The South African all-rounder remains a major asset in domestic T20 cricket. He has taken eight wickets in his last five matches and was Guyana's top bowler in their recent win over Barbados. The former Proteas seamer is a good pick to be the Warriors' top bowler in this match, too.

Brandon King to score under 20.5

King was last CPL season's highest run-scorer. He held the same status during the opening matches of this year's tournament. But recent scores of 8, 1 and 1 typify a loss of form. He isn't in the best position to turn this shoddy form around and could score under 20 here.
