ENG vs NZ Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Oct 05, 2023

Its here! The inauagaral match of the Cricket World Cup 2023  is finally here after all the build-up and the mindless warm-up matches, we will see intense competition. Starting out the tournament are England and New Zealand. These two played an epic Final in 2019, perhaps the greatest ODI ever, and come into this edition as contenders once more.

Let us take a closer look at both teams and see which ones have a chance to make a winning start to the tournament.

England vs New Zealand Head to Head Record

England and New Zealand have played against each other 95 times in ODI cricket, with both winning 44 times. More important is their recent form. England has won three out of the last four matches. Interestingly, England and New Zealand have only played against each other once in India (at Ahmedabad in 1996). That match was won by New Zealand.

ENG vs NZ Team Previews

England

England comes into the 2023 World Cup looking to defend its crown. It currently holds the T20 World Cup as well and another title win here would truly cement its place as one of the greatest ever white ball teams. Over the last two years, England has played 24 ODI's, winning 12 out of them. It does not always play its full-strength team in ODI cricket and so these figures have to be taken in context.

The biggest advantage for England is that its squad is very deep. It has powerful batters that can play in versatile positions, a number of all-rounders to ensure the captain always has options, and some terrific fast-bowlers.

On a ground like Ahmedabad, England will look to flex its batting might. That means Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler, and Joe Root will play a central role. Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone can come in later to absolutely obliterate attacks.

There is a fair bit of bounce and pace at Ahmedabad for white-ball matches and England will be aware of that since they did play a T20 series at this venue in 2021. Mark Wood with his extra pace will be dangerous but could also go for a lot of runs.

Sam Curran and Chris Woakes are the two bowlers that we think will end up doing the most damage.

There are no real weaknesses for England and they will fancy their chances at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

England Playing 11

Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

New Zealand

New Zealand will be very happy to have Kane Williamson in their midst. He played nicely during both the warm-up matches and looks raring to go. New Zealand never enters into a World Cup as the favorite but ends up making a massive impact in most tournaments!

New Zealand has played 36 matches in the last two years, winning 18 and lost 15 with the remaining being no-results.

Their record in India is not the greatest either. They have played three matches in the last five years and lost all three of them. Does this mean that you shold count them out against mighty England? Not at all but it does show why the odds being offered on them are so generous.

New Zealand will depend largely on Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell for their batting might. Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Rachin Ravindra, and others will add a lot of depth but it looks like the bulk of the runs will have to come from the first three.

The bowling attack is potent with Trent Boult back in the fray and Lockie Ferguson to provide genuine pace but the rest of the lineup is vulnerable. In fact, Ferguson can be very expensive on off-days and if Boult does not get early wickets, New Zealand will struggle to keep the runs down.

New Zealand Playing 11

Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Trent Boult.

ENG vs NZ Toss Prediction

The team that won the toss has a 57% win rate at the Narendra Modi Stadium. 14 out of the 26 matches have been won batting first, so not a huge advantage. If dew is expected to play a role then teams will bowl first otherwise batting first could be the preferred option.

Pitch and Conditions

There is no rain forecast in Ahmedabad on match day! The pitch will be flat with a tinge of green and offer nice pace as well. The ball tends to have generous bounce for white-ball matches and that is what we expect for the opening match.

The average score batting first is just 242 but we expect that to be surpassed with ease.

Fast bowlers that get a bit of bounce from the surface are likely to make an impact but overall, this should be a match dominated by the batters.

ENG vs NZ Betting Tips

We think England is by far the better ODI team in comparison to New Zealand. Over the course of 50 matches, small differences start to distinguish the teams and that is what we think will happen in this match. A better quality bowling lineup, more powerful batting, and more experience at the venue will help England win.

Bet on England to win.
