ENG vs NL Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Nov 08, 2023

England and Netherlands will contest the 40th match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The Dutch and English currently occupy eighth and 10th position, respectively, in the tournament's 10-team standings.

Netherlands have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the semi-final stage of the competition, if they win the rest of their round-robin matches and other results go their way. England are out of semi-final contention completely.

Let's see what the betting odds and cricket markets have in store for this key World Cup fixture in Pune, India.

England vs Netherlands head-to-head record

England and Netherlands have met six times in ODI cricket. Netherlands have never beaten England in this format of the international game. Four of England's last five ODI wins over Netherlands came after batting first.

ENG vs NL Team Previews

England

Reigning champions England's Cricket World Cup title defence has been marred by six defeats in seven matches. They only have victory over Bangladesh to show for their time in India, with defeats to New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, India and Australia.

While all is lost in terms of qualifying for the World Cup semi-finals, there is still something to gain ahead of the next Champions Trophy. If England lift themselves from 10th to at least seventh position at the end of this tournament, they will qualify for the Champions Trophy.

Opener Dawid Malan and former captain Joe Root remain England's leading run-scorers at this World Cup. Malan has 286 in seven innings to Root's 177 in seven, but support has been severely lacking from the out-of-form Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler and others.

Bowling-wise, England must continue to play without the injured Reece Topley. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid and seamer Chris Woakes are their leading wicket-takers at this tournament, with 10 and 8 respectively. Four of England's bowlers, though, are averaging over 50 here - far too high.

England Playing 11

Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid.

Netherlands

Netherlands have won two of their last five World Cup matches to keep the so-called minnows in nominal contention for a semi-final berth. Victories over South Africa and Bangladesh have shown the Dutch can go further. But they will be hard pressed against England, even if the opposition are effectively down and out.

Netherlands, like England, can qualify for the Champions Trophy if they end this tournament among the top seven teams. They will be eager to show the International Cricket Council and others that they belong in major limited-overs tournaments.

New cap Sybrand Engelbrecht and captain Scott Edwards have emerged as Netherlands' top run-scorers at the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Engelbrecht was not in the first-choice XI at the start of the tournament, but has since cemented his position with 222 runs in six innings. Edwards has 204 in seven.

Seamers Paul van Meekeren, Bas de Leede and Logan van Beek have reached double figures in terms of wickets taken this World Cup. All three will be key against England, but perhaps de Leede the most. He can build on his 11 wickets in six innings.

Netherlands Playing 11

Wesley Barresi, Max O'Dowd, Colin Ackermann, SA Engelbrecht, Scott Edwards, Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Logan van Beek, Roelof Van Der Merwe, Aryan Dutt, Paul Van Meekeren.

ENG vs NL Toss Prediction

The 10 ODIs hosted at this venue in Pune, since its international debut in 2013, have seen five won by the team batting second and five won by the team batting first.

This World Cup, two of the three Pune matches have been won by the team batting second. It's probable that the team to win this toss this time, too, will opt to bowl first.

Netherlands have never played an ODI here. England have played four here, but not since 2021.

Pitch and Conditions

This will be the fourth of five 2023 Cricket World Cup matches at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. The first three matches produced first-innings totals of 256, 241 and 357. In the last six ODI innings here, teams have only been bowled out twice. It can be well worth playing at least two specialist spinners here.

There is some rain predicted in Pune the day prior to the match - and a lot more on matchday. We could be in for a shortened fixture here. This would likely suit the team batting second.

ENG vs NL Betting Tips

If ever opportunity knocked for Netherlands to get their first ODI win over England, this is it. The English have gone from bad to worse this tournament - and could crash even further against a Dutch outfit that have already upset South Africa in India.

Netherlands are priced as 7.00 underdogs against 1.12 favourites England to win this match. Those are long odds, but could bring plenty of value.
