ENG vs IRE Team Previews

England

England recently hosted New Zealand for a 4-match T20 series which was followed by a 4-match ODI series. While the T20s ended in a draw, England dominated the ODIs to register a 3-1 victory.

However, none of the players from that squad, excluding Joe Root and Brydon Carse, feature in the current squad.

Joe Root was in poor form during the New Zealand series and will look to get some runs under his belt before he flies to India to participate in the ODI World Cup, and is likely to play only the first match.

England has an excellent opportunity to try out new players as it looks at future rejigs in the main team. Zak Crawley will lead the team which has a good balance of players, including Ben Duckett, Phil Salt, Will Jacks, and Matthew Potts to name a few.

3 uncapped players find a place in the squad, namely George Scrimshaw, Sam Hain, and Jamie Smith.

England is playing a squad that is composed of players not going to the World Cup. It is also playing an opponent that is not going to be taking part in the World Cup and so it is not really clear why they are playing this series in the first place!

What is also quite obvious is that England has the deepest bench in the cricketing world right now and this team going into the contest as clear favorites.

Ireland

Ireland defeated England during their latest head-to-head encounter in ODI during the tour in 2020. As the hosts dish out a second-rung team, the visitors will fancy their chances once again.

Paul Stirling will have a full-strength squad at his disposal as his disposal as Ireland hasn’t qualified for the World Cup. This will be the first ODI that the Irish will be playing after an extremely poor performance in the Qualifiers held in Zimbabwe earlier this year, where they finished 7th out of the 8 teams.

Stirling and Andy McBrine are expected to open the batting. Ireland has a good depth in batting thanks to all-rounders like Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, and George Delany, while Andrew Balbirnie, Harry Tector, and Lorcan Tucker can be quite devastating on their day.

The seam attack consists of Mark Adair, Graham Hume, Joshua Little, and Craig Young, while Theo van Woerkom is the lone specialist spinner.

A lack of experience can no longer be an excuse for Ireland as this bunch of players has been together for a long time. A lot of their players play in England on a regular basis and so the conditions are not foreign to them either.

A stagnation in the talent coming throgh, as well as clear limitations of the current crop of players, are bigger problems for the Irish to overcome. Winning anything in this series is not going to be an easy task for them.

ENG vs IRE Toss Prediction

Over 53% of the matches played here have been won while chasing, compared to just 34% while batting first. We, therefore, think that the winner of the toss will likely opt to bowl first.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

Headingley has hosted just 1 ODI since 2019, which was washed away due to rain. Therefore, it will be prudent for the batsmen to see off the new ball as they try and assess how the pitch behaves. The surface has historically helped the seamers to get some movement and batting won’t be that easy. The average first-inning score on this ground is around 235 and anything over 260 will be difficult to chase.

The weather is likely to remain overcast and we have a forecast for rain throughout the day.

ENG vs IRE Betting Tips

Despite England fielding a second-string team, we feel that they have enough quality players to see off any challenge from the visitors. The batting depth and power in the England lineup is substantial even without its first-choice players taking part. We also think their bowling lineup is stronger than the best that Ireland can muster up.

Nothing is a sure thing in sport but we think England winning this match is as close as it gets.

Bet on England to win.

Barring Root, None of the batsmen from either side have scored an ODI century on this ground. As this pitch isn’t the easiest to bat on, we are unlikely to see a score higher than 105.5.

The pitch at Leeds is quite helpful to the seamers and as both teams have a good pace attack, we are likely to see at least a couple of batsmen fall for a duck. The odds being offered are very generous.
