ENG vs AUS Team Previews

England

England will be very disappointed with the outcome of the 4th Test match. They had an excellent chance of winning the game but the weather played spoilsport, denying the hosts a famous victory. Nevertheless, they have one final chance at the Oval and will grab it with both their hands.

Zak Crawley was brilliant at Old Trafford, playing a blistering knock of 189 runs to set the tone for a big total. He is now the leading run-scorer of the tournament and will look to continue with the good form. The same however cannot be said about his opening partner, Ben Duckett, who has lacked consistency.

England will rely on its strong middle order to once again take them to a big total. Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Joe Root, and Johnny Bairstow have stuck to their attacking style of batting and reaped the benefits. Coming to the bowling, James Anderson hasn’t been in the best of forms, picking up just 4 wickets in 3 matches.

However, he is unlikely to be replaced as this might be his last Ashes Test on English soil. Stuart Broad has been brilliant so far, picking up 18 wickets, and will be supported by Chris Woakes and Mark Wood.

Moeen Ali will lead the spin attack, with Joe Root filling in at the other end.

Australia

After the draw at Manchester, Australia has successfully managed to retain the Ashes urn for the 4th consecutive time. However, they will take on the field with the intent to win their first Ashes series in England since 2001.

Australia was completely dominated by the opposition in the last match, and if not for the weather, could have very well lost the match. David Warner’s performance hasn’t been up to the mark on this tour and we expect his struggles to continue.

Usman Khawaja, who is the top run-getter for Australia, was dismissed cheaply in both innings at Old Trafford. Steve Smith too has lacked consistency. In such a scenario, there will be added pressure on Mitch Marsh, Marnus Labuschagne, and Travis Head to play a big inning.

As expected, the pace attack has been the biggest strength for the visitors on this tour. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood are the top wicket-takers for Australia in that order. However, they will need to find a way to combat the `Bazball´ approach and dry up the runs to put England’s batting under pressure.

There are indications that Todd Murphy will be back in the playing eleven and so one out of Cameron Green or Mitchell Marsh might find themselves out of the lineup.

ENG vs AUS Toss Prediction

The teams batting first have generally enjoyed the upper hand at this venue. We, therefore, think that the winner of the toss will likely opt to bat first here.

Pitch and Conditions

The surface at the Kennington Oval is one of the more batting-friendly wickets in England. The average first-inning score here is around 350. That said, the quicker bowlers will get some assistance, especially if the weather remains overcast. The spinners will come into action in the final two days. Anything over 200 will be difficult to chase here in the 4th inning.

There is a forecast for rain throughout this week and we might see some delays due to that.

ENG vs AUS Betting Tips

England has bounced back well since the last two matches and was on the verge of leveling the series in Manchester. Their batsmen are in particularly good form at the moment and the pitch is apt for their style of batting. However, looking at the weather forecast through this week and over the weekend, we are likely to see plenty of interruptions, which can rob the home team of a fair chance.

David Warner’s form hasn’t been the best on this tour and Usman Khawaja too was found struggling a bit in the last match. On the other hand, Zak Crawley batted well in the last match, while Ben Duckett has been in decent form too. We are therefore backing England to put up a bigger opening partnership.

Travis Head has an average of 39.37 in this series. He has scored over 27.5 runs in the first innings of each of his last 6 Test innings, 5 of which were in England. He scored a century in his last appearance on this ground, which was against India during the WTC Finals. We are therefore backing him to play another good inning.

The England batsmen are in excellent form at the moment. The team had as many as 6 batsmen putting up a 50+ score in the first innings at Manchester. As the pitch at the Oval is one of the best to bat on in England, we are backing the home team to take a lead after the first inning.
