ENG vs AUS Team Previews

England

England are the reigning World Cup champions, but have already been ruled out of reaching the semi-finals in the wake of five defeats in six matches. They have lost four in a row. The only win they have to show for this tournament is over Bangladesh, who have also been removed from semi-final contention.

Captain Jos Buttler and company still have proverbial pride to play for in India. There's Champions Trophy qualification to fight for as well. The top seven teams at the end of the round-robin stage of this World Cup will qualify for the next Champions Trophy.

Opener Dawid Malan and former captain Joe Root have been England's standout performers with the bat this tournament. Malan has 236 runs in six innings to Root's 175 in six. But they have severely lacked support and, against Australia, it's definitely all-rounders Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali's cue to step up.

Seamer Reece Topley was a promising prospect with the ball until he left the tournament due to injury. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid has since emerged as England's top wicket-taker with eight in six matches. Fast bowler Mark Wood and seamer Chris Woakes have four each.

Australia

Australia's 2023 Cricket World Cup campaign started poorly with successive defeats against India and South Africa. They have since strung together four consecutive wins over Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Netherlands and New Zealand. A win over England would all but book a berth in the semi-finals for the Aussies.

Australia's XI will be weakened in the absence of all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh for this match. Marsh has returned home for personal reasons, while Maxwell has been sidelined by concussion. Maxwell's exit is a big blow in particular, as he recently hit the fastest century - from 40 balls - in Cricket World Cup history.

Opener Travis Head's return from injury is a significant boost for the Aussies. He slotted straight back into the playing XI against New Zealand - and duly struck a century. Marsh's absence could put more onus on fellow all-rounders Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis, especially with the ball.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa has been prolific this tournament. He has taken 16 wickets in six matches. Zampa is the 2023 Cricket World Cup's joint-leading wicket-taker - and the only spinner among the top nine. He has double the number of wickets taken by seamers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, who have eight each.

ENG vs AUS Toss Prediction

Only nine out of the first 32 matches of this World Cup have been won by the team that also won the toss. That statistic suggests the captain to lose the toss has a 71 percent chance of winning the match.

Six of the last nine ODIs in Ahmedabad have been won by the team batting second. That includes the two 2023 World Cup matches in Ahmedabad so far. Saturday's toss-winning captain will likely choose to field first.

Pitch and Conditions

This will be the third of five 2023 Cricket World Cup matches played at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The ground hosted the tournament opener and will be used for the final as well.

The venue hasn't yielded a 300-plus total here in its last five ODIs. The last five first-innings scores here in ODI cricket have been 191, 282, 265, 237 and 176. Teams have been bowled out in five of the last 10 innings here.

This is not a high-scoring venue - certainly not as high as most of the other grounds being used for this tournament. Two spinners, two seamers and one batter have been Player of the Match in the last five ODIs here.

No rain is predicted in Ahmedabad during the days leading into the match. No wet weather is forecast for matchday. We should get a full fixture in here. The match will start at 1:30pm, when the dew factor won't have as much of a say as it would have with an earlier start.

ENG vs AUS Betting Tips

Even though Australia will be weakened without Maxwell and Marsh, they should win this match against an England unit low on confidence and without victory in their last four attempts.

Australia have won three ODIs in Ahmedabad. England have only done this once - and lost here as recently as October 2023.

The Aussies are priced as 1.62 favourites to win this match. England are at longer odds of 2.32 to win.
