CM vs WB Match Prediction - Jan 01, 2023

Two of the most successful teams in the Women’s Super Smash, the Canterbury Magicians and the Wellington Blaze, will face each other on New Year’s Day in one of the most anticipated contests.

Both teams are unbeaten so far this season. The Magicians are sitting at the top of the points table with 12 points, while Wellington is placed second but they do have an extra match in hand.

CM vs WB Team Previews

Canterbury Women

The Magicians have had smooth sailing so far and have never really found themselves in a close situation this season.

Much of their success can be credited to the all-round performance of Amy Satterthwaite who has been excellent with both, the bat as well as the ball. Satterthwaite has scored a total of 123 runs in the 2 innings that she has batted, and has scored half-centuries in both of them.

She has also picked up 3 wickets and has an economy rate of just 4.72. Kate  Anderson and Natalie Cox too have been pretty consistent at the top of the order. The bowling has been pretty tight, with Melissa Banks and Gabby Sullivan picking up 5 wickets each. Lea Tahuhu bowled an excellent spell of 3 for 17 in the last match and now has picked up a total of 4 wickets.

One weak point for the Magicians has been the performance of its middle-order batters. Izzy Sharp, Frances Wilson, and Abigale Gerken haven’t got going as of yet.

Wellington Blaze Women

The Wellington Blaze are the defending champions for this season after having won a record-extending 7th title in the previous edition.

Just like the Magicians, Wellington is unbeaten this season, thanks to some excellent all-round performances by captain Amelia Kerr. Kerr has scored 73 runs in 2 innings and has also picked up a wicket in each match. She has received good support from other middle-order batters, Leigh Kasperek and Maddy Green. The top order however hasn’t been in the best of forms as Rebecca Burns and Georgia Plimmer have both been seen struggling to score.

The Blaze’s bowlers have successfully defended the target in both matches so far, thanks to some disciplined bowling by Leigh Kasperek, Jess Kerr, and Xara Jetly.

Pitch and Conditions

The boundaries at the Hagley Oval are pretty large but the lightning-fast outfield makes it easier to score boundaries. The average first innings score here in Women’s Super Smash is around 140. The seamers will enjoy bowling here due to the good bounce on offer and the nature of the pitch tends to remain the same throughout the match.

The skies will remain overcast but there is minimal chance of rain. Temperatures will remain below 20 degrees Celsius.

CM vs WB Betting Tips

With both the teams remaining unbeaten so far in this competition, this is a difficult match to call. Both teams have good all-rounders and batters but it is the bowling that might end up as the differentiating factor. And in that department, we think that the Wellington Blaze holds a slight edge.

Bet on Wellington Blaze to win.
