CES vs NOD Match Prediction - Apr 29, 2023

The ongoing (2023) edition of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy got underway remarkably on Saturday with more players on professional contracts than ever before.

All eight teams were in action on the day the season started and we saw an enticing battle between the bat and the ball. Sunrisers, who had not won any match in the competition's three-year history, faced two-time champions Southern Vipers at the Ageas Bowl. South East Stars visited Thunder while Western Storm visited defending champions Northern Diamonds with Northern Diamonds winning quite comfortably in that match. The newly named Nottinghamshire side, The Blaze, replaced Loughborough-based Lightning and hosted and defeated Central Sparks in a match where bowlers made merry.

Up next in the tournament, we are all set to see Northern Diamonds take on Central Sparks in a much-anticipated contest. It would also be a battle between Central Sparks’ bowling and Northern Diamonds’ batting. The match between the two sides is to be played on 29th April 2023 at the County Ground, New Road, Worcester.

Central Sparks

During the off-season, Central Sparks strengthened their squad by signing left-arm quick Katie George from Western Storm, top-order batter Chloe Brewer from South East Stars, and Australian batting all-rounder Erin Burns from May until the start of August.

Central Sparks faced a tough defeat against The Blaze in their opening game of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. Despite opener Tammy Beaumont's impressive score of 60 and a total of 212 to defend, they were defeated by 59 runs. The Blaze off-spinner Lucy Higham played an outstanding game, achieving a career-best of five for 19. Higham also contributed 24 runs with the bat to aid her team.

Although England quick Issy Wong failed to deliver with the ball, three wickets each for Emily Arlott, Grace Potts, and spinner Georgia Davis gave the Sparks a chance to chase the target. However, no one could produce the necessary performance with the bat, and Sparks skipper Kirstie Gordon, who had taken over from Kathryn Bryce in the role, celebrated a winning start.

After the early loss of Marie Kelly, opener Beaumont and Georgie Boyce added 66 in 11.4 overs, but wickets in three consecutive overs by Potts halted their progress. Spinners Davis and Hannah Baker also contributed to drag the balance back towards Sparks. Eventually, The Blaze was dismissed in the 47th over.

Central Sparks failed to accelerate and suffered further losses as Higham and left-armer Gordon denied them. They fell to 153 all out with Katie George top-scoring with 31 at number eight. Higham chipped in with a total of five wickets and left-arm pacer Kirstie Gordon claimed two wickets as the Sparks finished well off the pace.

Northern Diamonds Women

The Diamonds suffered a significant loss of experience as Linsey Smith moved to Vipers and Nat Sciver-Brunt to The Blaze. Although they added batter Rebecca Duckworth from Thunder to their line-up, it was the South African batting all-rounder Chloe Tryon who proved to be the biggest boost during her substantial stint from April to August.

Northern Diamonds had a strong start to their defense of the Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy as they secured an impressive 105-run victory over Western Storm at Headingley. Led by their top-order batters Lauren Winfield-Hill, Bess Heath, and South African debutant Chloe Tryon, the Diamonds posted a commanding total of 290 for 8 in a rain-reduced 37 overs. Despite a couple of early wickets, Winfield-Hill's aggressive batting quickly stabilized the innings, and Heath's scintillating knock of 71 from just 38 balls further strengthened their position. When Heath was finally dismissed, Tryon continued the assault on the opposition bowlers, scoring a quickfire 63 from 36 deliveries.

The Western Storm, in response, never really got going and lost both openers within the first two overs. Despite a brief recovery led by Sophie Luff and Fran Wilson, the visitors fell well short of the target and were bowled out for just 185 runs. The leg-spinner Katie Levick was the pick of the bowlers for the Northern Diamonds, claiming four wickets, including her 300th career wicket, to secure a resounding victory for her team.

The win was a huge boost for Northern Diamonds, who had lost some key players in the off-season. It was a testament to their fighting spirit and resilience, and they will be hoping to carry this momentum forward in the rest of the tournament.

CES vs NOD Toss Prediction

While chasing is getting increasingly popular in this format of the game, it surely isn't as rewarding as it is popular. The surface tends to slow down towards the end of the match, especially in day games. We expect both captains to consider that and the fact that it is going to be a sunny, albeit cold day. Captain winning the toss is likely to bat first.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

County Ground at Worcester isn't really known for its true surface and that is apparent by the scores we have seen scored here. Most often in domestic matches, we have seen scores hovering in the range of about 210-230. We expect there to be ample assistance for the bowlers with weather conditions helping as well. Considering all that and how the two sides did in their respective opening matches, anything over 240 should be a good total batting first.

CES vs NOD Betting Tips

These are still early days in the tournament and a win here can go a long way towards the end. We have seen these two sides play only a match each and that along with on-paper combinations is all we have. Given that, it's pretty apparent that Northern Diamonds are a better side between the two. With the odds we are getting, betting on a Diamonds win is pretty much a no-brainer. This isn't a surface where we expect a truck-load of runs to be scored and with Central Sparks being a little light on batting resources, a bet on match-total not to more than par seems to be a pretty lucrative one. Bet on the match total to be less than 459.5 runs.
