BR vs JT Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Aug 31, 2023

The Barbados Royals and Jamaica Tallawahs will contest the 14th match of the 2023 Caribbean Premier League. The Royals and Tallawahs currently occupy fourth and fifth position, respectively, in this season's six-team CPL standings. A win here would push Jamaica to the top of the table. Even if Barbados win, they will remain in the bottom half of the table.

Barbados Royals vs Jamaica Tallawahs head-to-head record

The Royals and Tallawahs were due to meet earlier this month in the 2023 CPL, but the match was washed out without a ball bowled.

Their last four completed meetings have brought three wins for Jamaica, including two successive victories in 2022. All four of those wins were completed by the team batting second.

Barbados Royals

The Royals have a quick turnaround between heavy defeat to the Trinbago Knight Riders and this match against the reigning CPL champions. It's a tough ask for a team with just one win to show for their last four matches, but an opportunity to bounce back regardless.

Bowled out for a mere 61 against the Knight Riders earlier this week, the evident point of focus for Barbados needs to be their collective effort with the bat. Perhaps they went too hard, too early, in pursuit of a staunch 195-run target against Trinbago.

Openers Rahkeem Cornwall and Kyle Mayers each collected a first-ball duck. The middle order failed to pick up the slack and eight Barbados wickets ultimately fell to spin. Their fragility against specialist slow bowling, indeed, was exposed - and requires prompt improvement.

Seamer Jason Holder and spinner Qais Ahmad remain the Royals' leading wicket-takers this season. They have shared 11 wickets, but have not necessarily coupled these with reasonable economy. Holder is averaging almost 10 runs per over, while Ahmad is close to eight. Rectification is obviously required.

Jamaica Tallawahs

The Tallawahs will be looking recover after recent defeat to Guyana Amazon Warriors. That loss might have come as a surprise to some Jamaica fans, but could be the wake-up call required for the current CPL champions and their pursuit of a successful title defence.

They have the current season and 2022's leading run-scorer in opener Brandon King. The Jamaica captain failed against the Amazon Warriors, but should be inspired by the middle order's collective fight despite defeat. All-rounders Imad Wasim and Fabian Allen impressed with 63 and 47, respectively.

Whether Jamaica go with as many as four spinners in the XI again remains in the balance. They might look to replace wrist spinner Hayden Walsh with an additional seamer or specialist batter. Otherwise, the rest of the bowling combination has served the Tallawahs well this season.

Seamers Salman Irshad and Mohammad Amir have been solid enough. Amir took three wickets in defeat to Guyana, while Irshad recently collected four in victory over St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Irshad's Lasith Malinga-esque bowling action has been troubling several opposition batters this year.

BR vs JT Toss Prediction

Barbados won the toss and lost the match in the first match of the Bridgetown leg this year. Their decision at the flip of the coin continued the recent trend of teams choosing to bowl first.

However, six of the nine completed fixtures in the 2023 CPL so far have been won by the team batting second. The toss-winning captain, this time, could make his decision based on this telling statistic.

Pitch and Conditions

Bridgetown did not host any matches during the 2022 CPL. One has been played here so far this season. The first innings yielded a total of 194 and the second 61 - and 15 wickets fell. Almost 20 of the 32.1 overs came from spin.

Jamaica fielded four spinners in Bridgetown earlier in the tournament and could be tempted to do the same here - or have at least three. Barbados will surely be thinking about replacing fast bowler Obed McCoy with an extra spinner.

Rain has threatened in Bridgetown this week, but the forecast of wet conditions at Kensington Oval on matchday looks to have relented. We should get a full fixture in. Humidity levels will be characteristically high and the temperature in the early 30 degrees Celsius.

BR vs JT Betting Tips

As the reigning champions and among the favourites this season, Jamaica should really take a win against the Royals here. Barbados have been underwhelming, while Jamaica have promised plenty - and shouldn't be too put off by recent defeat to Guyana.

Jamaica's string of all-rounders make for a balanced XI, compared to the Barbados team, which is evidently light on batting resources and probably required a tweak among the bowling resources. Bet on the Tallawahs to win the match at 1.78. The underdog Royals are priced at 2.20. You can also place bets on who will win the match and toss.

Irshad is the leading wicket-taker in the 2023 CPL so far with seven in three matches. He has pace and an awkward bowling action that frequently troubles batters. He is a good pick for Jamaica's top bowler and top bowler in the match overall.

Mayers got a duck against Trinbago, but is one of Barbados' best batsman regardless. His fine form was keeping Proteas star Quinton de Kock out of the Lucknow Super Giants XI during the Indian Premier League earlier this year.
