BAN vs SL Team Previews

Bangladesh

This will be the first time Bangladesh have played Test cricket this year. The last time they did was in November 2023, when the Tigers shared a one-all series draw against New Zealand. Four months later, there is a lot to build on in the longest format of the international game.

Bangladesh won't have Mushfiqur Rahim for this match and the rest of the series. The former captain and star batter has been sidelined by injury. Rahim was key to Bangladesh's series draw with New Zealand and will be missed. It'll be interesting to see who Bangladesh name as a middle-order replacement. Rahim's absence makes captain Najmul Shanto's role with the bat all the more key.

It is anticipated that Taijul Islam is going to have a big role to play with the ball again. He was involved in the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka. In the Tests against New Zealand, he took 15 wickets in two matches - 10 of those came in the series opener. Conditions should suit the left-arm spinner again.

Bangladesh Playing 11

Najmul Hossain Shanto, Zakir Hasan, Khaled Ahmed, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mominul Haque, Mehidy Hasan, Litton Das, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Nahid Rana, Shahadat Hossain.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka are currently at the very bottom of the International Cricket Council's latest World Test Championship points table. Languishing in ninth position, they will be hard pressed against fourth-placed Bangladesh, especially away from home and in the wake of a recent ODI series defeat to the same opposition.

Wanindu Hasaranga effectively came out of Test retirement to compete in this series, but soon after was barred from being selected. It's an interesting move from Sri Lanka, who are perhaps trying to extract longevity out of their star leg-spinning all-rounder. Hasaranga, like Rahim for Bangladesh, will be missed by his team.

Sri Lanka last played Test cricket as recently as February 2024, when they trounced Afghanistan by 10 wickets. Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal performed well with the bat - and Prabath Jayasuriya with the ball - during that one-off fixture. All three have been retained in the squad for this two-match series.

Sri Lanka Playing 11

Dimuth Karunaratne, Nishan Madushka, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, Prabath Jayasuriya, Vishwa Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara.

BAN vs SL Toss Prediction

The Sylhet International Cricket Stadium is the venue for this match. This will be just the third time this ground has hosted a Test match.

On the previous two occasions, the team to win the toss decided to bat first. The same is likely this month.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

The Sylhet International Cricket Stadium will likely produced a '40-wicket' pitch. In the previous two Tests here, all 40 wickets have fallen.

A first-innings total of 300-plus could be competitive. Expect plenty of turn and both teams to select at least two specialist slow bowlers.

The weather forecast suggests dry conditions on day one, but rain is predicted for days two through five.

BAN vs SL Betting Tips

This is a 'results' pitch, rather than prone to a draw. But the weather might have a different say and force a draw. If the rain stays away enough, Bangladesh should have enough in them to beat Sri Lanka here.

Bet on 2.50 Bangladesh to beat 2.00 favourites Sri Lanka in this key series opener. A draw is priced at 6.50.
