AUS vs SL Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Oct 16, 2023

Australia and Sri Lanka will play the 14th match of the Cricket World Cup. Both teams are currently positioned in the bottom half of the tournament's 10-team standings. Neither team have won a match yet in two attempts each.

Let's see what the betting odds and cricket markets have in store for this fixture between the Aussies, who have won the Cricket World Cup five times, and Sri Lanka, who have one title.

Australia vs Sri Lanka head-to-head record

Australia have three wins to Sri Lanka's two in their last five ODI meetings. Overall, the Australians have beaten the Sri Lankans 63 times in this format - and Sri Lanka have beaten Australia on 35 occasions. In Cricket World Cups, the margin is eight-one to the Aussies.

AUS vs SL Team Previews

Australia

Australia's pursuit of a record sixth World Cup title is off to a poor start. They have lost to India and South Africa recently - and were bowled out for under 200 in both matches. The spotlight, then, is understandably on their frailties with the bat.

The Aussies were without duo Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell for their ODI series in South Africa prior to the World Cup. The return of Smith and Maxwell, though, hasn't helped multiple attempts to post or chase big targets. Their top batter this tournament is the talented Marnus Labuschagne, who wasn't in the squad originally.

The fact that Australia's top scorer at this Cricket World Cup has a mere 73 runs in two innings is telling. Smith and opener David Warner's numbers are inferior, while bowlers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have scored more runs than batters Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh.

This is a long tournament. Teams play nine matches each prior to the semi-finals. Australia remain in contention for a berth in the next stage, but can ill afford to lose another match if they are to stay in the running. Sri Lanka have been bogey opposition for them recently; maybe this time as well.

Australia Playing 11

David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, like Australia, have lost to South Africa this tournament - and have suffered defeat to Pakistan. Unlike, Australia, Sri Lanka have posted 300-plus totals on both occasions; to no avail. They, too, can hardly afford to lose a third successive Cricket World Cup match if qualification for the semi-final stage is to remain on the table.

Wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis has been immense for Sri Lanka in the tournament so far. He followed 158 against Afghanistan in a warm-up match with 76 against the Proteas and 122 versus Pakistan. He couples risk with calculated hitting - and is a quick study of conditions. His team will require more of the same here.

Bowling-wise, the injury absence of leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga continues to expose Sri Lanka's attack as weakened. The match fitness of finger spinner Maheesh Theekshana will be a boost, while seamer Dilshan Madushanka is their top wicket-taker in the tournament so far with four in two matches.

Sri Lanka would do well to challenge an Australian unit undecided on whether the experienced Alex Carey or inexperienced Josh Inglis should fill the wicketkeeper-batter berth - and if all-rounder Marcus Stoinis is a stronger fit than the arguably overworked Cameron Green.

AUS vs SL Toss Prediction

Eight of the first 11 matches of the 2023 Cricket World Cup saw the toss-winning captain choose to bowl first. The team to win the toss here will likely opt to bat second, too.

It's an evident theme that teams want to know their target early and chase it later. This doesn't necessarily supersede conditions, but certainly has a big role to play at the flip of the coin.

Pitch and Conditions

This will be the second of five matches played in Lucknow this tournament. South Africa and Australia played here recently, posting 311 for seven and 177 all out, respectively.

The average score in Lucknow in the last five ODIs has been 232 - this is not a high-scoring venue compared to others being used for this tournament.

It's well worth playing two specialist spinners here - and perhaps opening the bowling with one of them. Australia could squeeze a few early overs out of Maxwell.

Weather-wise, light rain is predicted in the region on matchday, but probably not enough to shorten this fixture, if it arrives at all. Humidity levels and the temperature will be characteristically high in Lucknow.

AUS vs SL Betting Tips

Australia are smarting from five successive ODI defeats - three in South Africa and two in India. They seem undecided about their first-choice XI, but all of this could just be the spur needed to bounce back Sri Lanka.

An opposition attack featuring Cummins and Starc could prove too hot to handle for Sri Lanka, who are priced as 3.75 underdogs. The Aussies are offered as 1.30 favourites.
