Mumbai Indians’ Path to the Title

The Indians’ season in 2025 was one of consistency and dominance. Mumbai never had more than one loss in a row, and were excellent in February with three straight wins. They finished with a 5-3 record (the same as the Capitals) thanks largely to explosive batting and stoic leadership throughout the season from Kaur (captain) and Nat Sciver-Brunt, as well as solid bowling from Amelia Kerr and Hayley Matthews.

The Indians had several key performances on the path to the Championship game and to be the eventual WPL 2025 winner. Sciver-Brunt led not just the Indians in runs scored, but also the entire WPL, with a staggering 523 runs in 10 innings and finishing with a 65.37 average for the season.

The Indians displayed their batting prowess, as they had three of the top five run-scorers for the 2025 season, as Kaur (302 runs) and Matthews (307) were instrumental in smashing the ball around the ground. Not to be outdone, Kerr was the best bowler in the league and finished with 18 wickets, while Matthews (18 wickets) and Sciver-Brunt (12 wickets) displayed their importance as all-rounders crucial to the team.

Qualifying and winning the Eliminator match

As the Capitals finished with the best record in the season, they gained automatic entry into the WPL Final. The Indians had to win the Eliminator game against the Gujarat Giants in order to reach the last match. There was no need to worry, as the Indians simply cruised through the entire game and showed why they were the best overall team.

The Indians scored 213 runs in the first innings due to 77 runs each from Matthews and Sciver-Brunt. The Giants had little resistance, ending with 166 runs thanks to excellent bowling from Kerr (2/28) and Matthews (3/31).

In some ways, the 2025 WPL winner mirrored the Indians’ championship match in 2023. Mumbai defeated the Capitals in 2023 as well, and it was no surprise to see Sciver-Brunt (60* runs) and Kaur (37) leading the team with amazing batting. Kerr (2/18) and Matthews (3/5) were likewise amazing with the ball and helped to prevent the Capitals from reaching an unbeatable target in the first innings.

Best moments and turning points

Things started out well enough for the Capitals after winning the toss and deciding to bowl first, as the Indians’ opening pair of Matthews and Bhatia were dismissed for a combined 11 runs.

However, Sciver-Brunt (30 runs) and Kaur (66) were just sublime in setting the tone and helping the Indians steady the ship. With 9 fours and 2 sixes, Kaur reached her 66 runs in only 44 deliveries, as her captain’s knock essentially sealed the victory, considering the rest of the lower order didn’t help much with the bat.

The Indians set a fairly reachable target of 150 runs for the Capitals to win, but Delhi also had a bad start from their batters after danger woman, Meg Lanning, was bowled by Sciver-Brunt for only 13 runs.

Kapp made a brilliant 40 from 26 deliveries, and things looked good for the Capitals when they only needed 35 from 24 balls, but it was again Sciver-Brunt saving the day after she dismissed Kapp with a good catch from Matthews. The Capitals crumbled and managed only 141 due to standout bowling from Sciver-Brunt (3/30) and Kerr (2/25).

How the Indians secured victory

The Indians looked like the best team all season to be the WPL winner in 2025, and while a Capitals vs. Indians matchup seemed the most probable Final, it was Mumbai’s resilience in the face of pressure that really secured them their second title. Kaur was brilliant with 66, but the experienced bowling of Sciver-Brunt and Kapp to help put on pressure really secured the win.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s Leadership

Mumbai captain Kaur is one of the most veteran players on the team and deserves to be the 2025 WPL winner. A great player for her country of India in international matches, Kaur is a brilliant T20 batter and leads her team with rousing captaincy and even better batting. While she was the third-leading run-scorer for the Indians during the season, her 33.35 average always kept Mumbai such a dangerous batting squad.

"The way we played today, we fought till the last ball, even though we didn't start the way we wanted," said Kaur in a post-match interview. "I think it's all about being there, doing the right things, and that's what we were thinking and we were trying [to do]."

Delhi Capitals: So Close Yet So Far

It was hard for the Capitals to lose for the third straight time in the WPL Final. Despite being top of the ladder in 2025, the team just wasn’t good enough to take the championship. Lanning (276 runs) and Verma (304 runs) batted well during the season and Jonassen (13 wickets) also helped with the bowling. Dismissing the Indians for 149 in the Final was a good start, but apart from Kapp’s 40, the batters just let down the team.
