Another season of the Indian Premier League is upon us at last and with matches in full swing, cricket fans are ready for the unbeatable IPL predictions to unfold over the coming weeks.
Millions of people tune in to watch broadcasts of each game in the IPL, but there is no doubt that some teams are more popular than others.
Naturally, there are many different ways to measure the fanbase of IPL teams, such as social media followers, attendances at games and sales of merchandise. How many titles an IPL team has won in their history also has a major role to play, of course.
If you're looking to engage even further with the league, online cricket betting is a hugely popular way to add excitement to the matches.
But is it possible to decide which team has the most fans in the IPL overall? Let's take a look.
The below table, which has been compiled by OCBscores research, shows the social media following across the three main platforms: X, Facebook and Instagram. Using this data, we can help to see which IPL teams have the most fans - at least online.
IPL team | X (Twitter) | Total | Rank | ||
Chennai Super Kings | 10.8 million | 14 million | 17.2 million | 42 million | #1 |
Delhi Capitals | 2.6 million | 9.1 million | 4.1 million | 15.8 million | #5 |
Gujarat Titans | 613,000 | 1.8 million | 4.4 million | 6.8 million | #9 |
Kolkata Knight Riders | 5.3 million | 17 million | 6.8 million | 29.1 million | #4 |
Lucknow Super Giants | 811,000 | 1.1 million | 3.4 million | 5.3 million | #10 |
Mumbai Indians | 8.3 million | 14 million | 15.8 million | 38.1 million | #2 |
Punjab Kings | 3 million | 9.1 million | 3.5 million | 15.6 million | #6 |
Rajasthan Royals | 2.9 million | 5.4 million | 4.6 million | 12.9 million | #8 |
Royal Challengers Bengaluru | 7.3 million | 10 million | 16.8 million | 34.1 million | #3 |
Sunrisers Hyderabad | 3.3 million | 6.7 million | 4.7 million | 14.6 million | #7 |
Chennai Super Kings lead the way when it comes to total social fans, racking up around 42 million followers across Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter).
It is not a major surprise to see CSK out on top when they are one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL, having racked up five titles to date.
Mumbai Indians are level with CSK on five IPL titles and not too far behind when it comes to total social following either, with 38.1 million followers in total.
Interestingly, Mumbai Indians and CSK have the same followers on Facebook: 14 million.
In third place for total social followers among IPL sides is Royal Challengers Bengaluru on 34.1 million, but RCB are actually second behind CSK on Instagram.
Although Kolkata Knight Riders did not make it into the top three for total social following among IPL teams, they are actually leading the way on Facebook.
With 17 million followers on the platform, KKR are showing other teams how it is done there.
CSK have the most followers on both X (over 10 million) and Instagram (over 16 million), so the team's social media strategy off the pitch is clearly working well.
The newer IPL teams still have a long way to catch up on the original sides in the competition.
Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants both entered the league in 2022 as part of the IPL expansion, but they are unsurprisingly still the least followed IPL teams on social media now.
Lucknow Super Giants are not too far behind some of the other teams on Instagram, but their lack of success on the pitch is likely contributing to a lack of following online.
Although Gujarat Titans have already got an IPL title under their belts, this is yet to translate to collecting a lot of followers online, with their total fans on X lagging well behind all other teams.
More success on the pitch would help Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants get more fans.
Attendance at games is considered a good way to decide which IPL team has the most fans.
Naturally, higher crowds are possible at the biggest cricket stadiums that are used for the IPL.
For example, data analysis shows that more than half a million people attended the nine games that were played at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad during IPL 2024.
As the total attendance in the nine games was 595,654, this means that the average crowd per match stood at just over 66,000.
The highest attendance was for the game between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings, with over 89,000 fans packing the stands at the Narendra Modi stadium
India's top event by a distance, the IPL is now one of the world's most attended sports leagues.
The popularity of an IPL team can be explained by many different factors, with the performance of the team certainly one of the most important.
It is no surprise to see Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings leading the way for online followers when they have won a record five IPL titles each.
On the flip side, Punjab Kings have been one of the worst-performing teams in the IPL throughout its history, so it is no surprise the team lacks followers online.
Star players also help to attract fans to certain teams. CSK have been linked with the Indian icon MS Dhoni for many seasons and this is why a lot of people have chosen to support them.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians have showcased legends of the sport such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah over the years.
On a similar note, Virat Kohli has brought millions of eyeballs to RCB games over the years.
Celebrity influence plays a part too. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is a co-owned of KKR and this has helped to boost the popularity of the team in recent times.
Marketing and branding can tie in too, with IPL sides with the strongest brands attracting fans.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, for instance, are known as the Orange Army and those bright colours can help the team to stand out from the crowd.
The growth of the IPL has been mirrored in the number of people following its teams online.
Expanding the tournament has helped to bring more global eyeballs to the tournament and with talk that more teams could be added in the future, the IPL's growth is unlikely to slow down.
With so many millions of people following IPL teams, fan engagement will be a challenge.
Keeping such large followings engaged with teams is something for the IPL to keep in mind.
The IPL is also still a relatively new phenomenon and the popularity of certain teams could shift as iconic players like Kohli and Dhoni edge towards retiring from the game.
What seems sure is that the most successful sides like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are likely to remain the most popular teams in the IPL.
