Even at 38, Australian batter David Warner commands huge respect on the cricket pitch. Warner has long been one of the most dependable and devastating batsmen in the world, especially in T20 cricket. His skills as an opening batter regularly make him a big asset on any team and it’s no surprise he became the highest paid player in the PSL.
Some have raised eyebrows at the Karachi Kings giving Warner a massive $300,000 contract for the 2025 season, which now makes him the highest-paid player in league history. Warner’s talent with the bat makes him worth it and the PSL is doing its best to rival other major T20 leagues such as the IPL and BBL. As the most expensive player in the PSL, Warner brings a tonne of cricket experience and talent, not to mention leadership, and it’s hard not to see this investment paying off for the Kings.
Despite his retirement from international cricket, Warner’s $300,000 contract makes sense from a batting standpoint, as he has a batting average of 37.00 in nearly 400 league T20 matches. Warner’s marketability is without question as a major factor for the contract, as he’s one of the most identifiable names on the international cricket scene. Warner will bring value to the Kings both on and off the pitch, and his larger-than-life personality will help draw headlines to the PSL.
Warner has regularly performed well in other T20 leagues and in T20Is, so even with a lot of mileage on his legs, PSL fans can still expect Warner to deliver top-notch batting during every game.
As the PSL’s highest paid player, the Kings have made a splash with the Warner contract, but it’s easy to see why. The Kings’ first and only championship was in 2020, so the time is ready for another title. Warner will boost not only the team itself, but also the entire league, as his name carries much weight across the globe for cricket fans. The Kings clearly think that Warner and his teammates will be enough to secure one more championship.
After David Warner, several talented cricket players in the PSL 2025 have secured big contracts. While perhaps not as internationally well known as Warner, they will be a nevertheless be a major part of the team lineup.
Player | Team | Category | Salary (USD) | Salary (INR) |
David Warner | Karachi Kings | Platinum Plus | $300,000 | ₹2.5 crore |
Kane Williamson | Lahore Qalandars | Platinum | $220,000 | ₹1.83 crore |
Adam Milne | Multan Sultans | Platinum | $220,000 | ₹1.83 crore |
Rashid Khan | Islamabad United | Platinum | $220,000 | ₹1.83 crore |
Jos Buttler | Peshawar Zalmi | Platinum | $220,000 | ₹1.83 crore |

As the PSL league continues to expand, the competition for top talent will only get fiercer, making each season even more thrilling.
We can see that not far behind Warner, several star players also received $220,000 contracts. New Zealand batter Williamson went to Lahore, fellow New Zealander bowler, Milne, was picked up by Multan, bowling allrounder Rashid Kahn from Afghanistan went to Islamabad, and English batter, Jos Buttler, was signed by Peshawar.
It’s true that the most expensive players in the 2025 PSL usually go to larger franchises such as the Qalandars and Kings due to bigger budgets. Still, the Sultans and the Zalmi are also beginning to invest in well-known international stars, which only helps to make the league competitive. It appears that player fit, not just their name, is now a factor in why they are chosen by a PSL team.
While there is a salary gap between international and local players, there’s no doubt that Pakistani stars such as Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi command a lot of respect and get impressive salaries. International stars certainly receive the most money, but local players are closing the wide salary gap.
Let’s track the highest salaries in the evolution of the PSL highest paid player from 2016 to 2025.
Season | Year | Maximum Salary (USD) | % Increase from Previous | Notable Development |
PSL 1 | 2016 | $170,000 | Initial season | |
PSL 3 | 2018 | $185,000 | 8.80% | Introduction of sixth team |
PSL 5 | 2020 | $210,000 | 13.50% | First full season in Pakistan |
PSL 8 | 2023 | $250,000 | 19.00% | Expanded category structure |
PSL 10 | 2025 | $300,000 | 20.00% | Premium category introduction |
Everything from the expansion of newer teams to the introduction of premium categories like Platinum and Diamond salary levels have attributed to bigger paydays. Players earned fairly low salaries in 2016 in terms of today’s salaries, but the PSL’s growth from revenue and viewership, as well as the need to compete with other T20 leagues, have helped increase salaries.
The PSL understandably has to work harder to attract global cricket talent due to the rise of other T20 leagues. While some leagues are played at different times, others overlap and many players prefer to be available for international games. This makes finding star players difficult, especially when the highest individual salary for the IPL is 27 crore (Pant) and 2.5 crore for the PSL (Warner).
Here is the 2025 salary category structure regarding the most expensive players in the PSL.
Category | Salary (INR) | Salary (USD) | Notable Features |
Platinum | ₹2.30 crores | $270,000-300,000 | Top-tier international players |
Diamond | ₹1.15 crores | $135,000 | Established international stars |
Gold | ₹82.30 lakhs | $100,000 | Senior players and rising stars |
Silver | ₹41.15 lakhs | $50,000 | Domestic talents and squad players |
Emerging | ₹16.46 lakhs | $20,000 | Young prospects and new talents |
Supplementary | ₹8.23 lakhs | $10,000 | Injury replacements and specialists |
At the top of the salary ladder are the Platinum players. Only the best of the best receive these contracts and will be the face of their respective franchises.
This category consists of very skilled and experienced cricket players that aren’t quite commanding the big salary. They will be important to the team’s success, nevertheless. You’ll find a mix of international stars, senior players with experience, and rising stars with a lot of potential.
Here you’ll find many local players with a lot of skill with bat and ball, as well as emerging talents who could very well be the “next big thing”.
These are the last to be picked and, while talented and play their part, usually aren’t big names on the cricket pitch. They will often be injury replacements or play specialist roles for their team.
