Before the tournament began, we saw a mega auction in Jeddah late last year that saw the franchise building their squads almost from scratch. This has thrown up exciting combinations of explosive batsmen, brilliant bowlers, and match-winning all-rounders.
So, let’s check out how all the teams stack up against each other and what makes each franchise dangerous in IPL 2025:
One of the most successful teams in the history of IPL, the Chennai Super Kings have finished in the top-4 during 12 of their 15 appearances in the league. While they finished 5th in the previous season, the team has made some tactical purchases during the IPL mega auction and looks set to put up yet another solid performance.
CSK’s biggest strength is the host of senior players that the team possesses in its squad. MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Ravichandran Ashwin have played plenty of matches in the Yellow jersey and have complementary skills.
In addition to this experienced core, CSK has invested plenty of time and money in talented youngsters like Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Sam Curran, and Shivam Dube. As a result, CSK has a strong batting unit with plenty of depth and a well-balanced bowling unit that is up for any challenge.
CSK has loaded its team with world-class spinners and while it may not be able to dominate away from home, it is going to be very hard to beat at the MA Chadimabaram stadium, its home.
The Mumbai Indians have won the coveted trophy on 5 occasions, which is no mean feat. While the previous season may not have been their best, the team management has made plenty of changes over the last few months, and the Indians seem to have a solid combination of players at their disposal.
The Mumbai Indians’ big strength is the strong top order. Rohit Sharma, over the years, has emerged as one of the most reliable opening batsmen in the league. His effortless batting makes him one of the most dangerous batsmen during the Powerplay and can take the game away from the opposition in a matter of few overs.
While the team may no longer have Ishan Kishan to join him, the two new inclusions, Will Jacks and Ryan Rickleton are both excellent T20 batsmen. Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya. Pandya is also a match-winning all-rounder, who will have the support of Mitchell Santner.
Last year, Mumbai’s bowling, particularly seam bowling, was pretty weak. However, the team has strengthened that area considerably as Jasprit Bumrah is now joined by Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, both of whom have plenty of experience in the IPL.
No other team boasts of so many India international superstars in one team. India’s T20 World Cup winning captain (Rohit Sharma), India’s best all-rounder (Hardik Pandya), India’s best-ever T20 batter (SKY) and arguably the best white-ball bowler of all time (Jasprit Bumrah) make MI dangerous even before you start adding in the overseas talent.
After failing to make it to the playoffs in the last 3 seasons, the Delhi Capitals have made wholesale changes to the squad and are looking pretty strong at the moment.
The Capitals have brought in KL Rahul during the auction and that is a big plus for the team. He will likely open the batting for the team and will be joined by Jake Fraser-McGurk, forming a strong and explosive pair. The middle order has an excellent mix of youth and experience thanks to the presence of Faf du Plessis, Abishek Porel, Tristan Stubbs, and Ashutosh Sharma.
The Delhi Capitals also boast a versatile bowling unit. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel have had a brilliant time at the recently concluded Champions Trophy and will headline the spin department. Patel has also emerged as an excellent finisher and can be quite dangerous during the death overs. The spin attack will be flanked by a well-balanced pace attack consisting of Mitchell Starc, T Natarajan, Mukesh Kumar, and Mohit Sharma.
Mitchell Starc may not be the force he was in his prime but he is still one of the best T20 bowlers going around. He leads a bowling attack that features Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, India’s first-choice T20 bowlers. This varied but left-arm predominant bowling attack makes DC very dangerous in all conditions.
After making it to the Finals in its first two seasons of the IPL, the Gujarat Titans struggled quite a bit last year, as they finished 8th on the points table. However, the mega auction has given the team management to rethink its strategy and they have managed to pick up a strong squad for IPL 2025.
The team splurged more than 15 crore rupees to strengthen its opening pair, which has proved to be an Achilles heel for them last year. By bringing in Jos Buttler, the Titans have managed to form one of the strongest opening pairs as he joins Shubman Gill. This strong pair will be complemented by a well-balanced middle order that is likely to include Sai Sudharsan and Mahipal Lomror.
The Gujarat Titans also have a strong bench when it comes to all-rounders. After retaining Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia, the Titans have also brought in Washington Sundar, Sherfane Rutherford, Glenn Phillips, and Karim Janat. The presence of so many quality all-rounders adds plenty of versatility when picking up a strong playing XI.
The Gujarat Titans have signed up Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj for this season and they are likely to perform duties with the new ball. The duo has plenty of experience bowling during the Powerplay and can make early inroads in the opposition batting line-up. Joining them in the pace department will be Ishant Sharma, Prasidh Krishna, and Gerald Coetzee. As a result, the Titans have one of the strongest pace departments in the league.
Buttler and Gill promise to light up the IPL as the best opening pair of the league while a brilliant compliment of all-rounders gives them flexibility. A return to the playoffs looks increasingly likely this season.
KKR was in scintillating form last year as they lifted the trophy after defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad with a clinical performance at the Chepauk.
While the team did have to let go of Shreyas Iyer and Mitchell Starc, the Knight Riders have managed to retain some of their best performers from last season and form a strong core. Sunil Narine was brilliant as an opener in the last season. While he is likely to keep batting in that slot, there is plenty of firepower surrounding him thanks to the presence of Quinton de Kock, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, and Manish Pandey. KKR also has arguably the strongest middle order due to the presence of Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, and Ramandeep Singh.
KKR also possesses some of the best all-rounders in the business. While Sunil Narine and Andre Russell have proved to be match-winners on more than one occasion, the inclusion of Rovman Powell and Moeen Ali only strengthens its overseas arsenal.
Varun Chakravarthy is another positive for KKR. Coming on the back of some excellent performances in the Champions Trophy, Chakravarthy could prove to be the team’s best asset.
The mystery spin duo of Chakravarthy and Narine will test all opposing batters while Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh seem ready to take the next step in their evolution as T20 batters. Also, Andre Russell may be nearing the end of his career but he remains the most dangerous all-rounder in the IPL!
Despite an average performance last season, the Lucknow Super Giants remain a quality side thanks to the presence of some potential match-winners.
LSG boasts of an explosive batting unit that will be headlined by Nicholas Pooran. He has been one of the best batsmen in the 20-over format and can take any bowling unit to the cleaners if it's his day. In addition to Pooran, LSG has David Miller, Rishabh Pant, Mitchell Marsh, and Ayush Badoni, all of whom are clean strikers of the ball.
LSG has a nice mix of right and left-handed batsmen, that can disturb the rhythm of the opposition bowling attack. Coming to the bowling, the Super Giants have a strong pace attack that can bowl through various phases of the match. Mayank Yadav has got raw pace, while Avesh Khan bowled some excellent line and length in the last season. In addition to domestic talent, LSG will also employ the services of Shamar Joseph, who has been a consistent performer for the West Indies.
Nicholas Pooran with the bat and Mayank Yadav with the ball can both be absolutely unstoppable on their day. LSG just needs to hope both these players are at their best to allow the likes of Pant, Miller, and Marsh thrive as well.
One of the worst-performing teams in recent years, the Punjab Kings haven’t been able to reach the playoffs in the last 10 seasons. However, the latest mega auction has provided the team with an opportunity to hit the reset button, build the squad from scratch, and put up a better performance this year.
The Punjab Kings retained just two players, Glenn Maxwell and Prabhsimran Singh prior to the auction. Both of them are quality batsmen, with Maxwell being a handy spinner too. The batting line-up has received a huge boost with Shreyas Iyer coming in. Iyer led KKR to win the title last year and in addition to being a solid middle-order batsman, brings in leadership skills as well.
The Punjab Kings have a lot of overseas all-rounders who can turn the game in the team’s favor. These include Marcus Stoinis, Aaron Hardie, Marco Jansen, and Azmatullah Omarzai. All of them are potential matchwinners who can contribute equally with the bat and the ball. The Punjab Kings have serious depth in their bowling as well.
The inclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal, who is the leading wicket-taker in the IPL, adds bite to the spin attack. Arshdeep Singh has been India’s strike bowler in the shortest format and will be joined by the likes of Xavier Bartlett, Lockie Ferguson, and Vijayakumar Vyshak.
Glenn Maxwell had his best ever year in the IPL with Punjab. He has been in brilliant form for Australia and could prove to be a very smart buy for PBKS. Shreyas Iyer is also currently at the top of his game and makes PBKS a very dangerous side to come across.
Despite retaining the maximum number of players allowed, the Rajasthan Royals has the smallest squad among all franchises. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing as they pack plenty of punch.
The Royals have some of the best domestic talent at their disposal and that can turn out to be its biggest strength. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson will headline a strong batting line-up that has some excellent batsmen like Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Rana, and Shimron Hetmeyer. There is also a solid all-rounder in Riyan Parag who will add depth to the batting.
The bowling attack is well-balanced as the Royals have managed to scalp Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, who are among the best spinners in the white-ball format. The pace department has a nice mix of domestic and international bowlers which include Tushar Deshpande, Akash Madhwal, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Jofra Archer.
Is there a young player more talented than Yashasvi Jaiswal? He has lit up the IPL, is a T20 regular for India, and has taken to Test cricket with ease. His presence at the top of the order with Sanju Samson for support makes RR very dangerous indeed.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru have one of the most loyal fanbases among all franchises and they usually start as one of the favorites to lift the title. However, despite reaching the playoffs in 4 out of the last 5 seasons, they are yet to make it to the finals.
However, this year could be different as the team management has brought in some serious talent in a bid to lift its first title. Having already retained Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar in the batting line-up, RCB has further bolstered its batting unit by bringing in Phil Salt, Devdutt Padikkal, and Jitesh Sharma. RCB has invested heavily in some of the best all-rounders in the business like Liam Livingstone, Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Tim David, and Jacob Bethell.
Another big positive for RCB is its experienced pace line-up. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Yash Dayal, Josh Hazlewood, and Lungi Ngidi are some of the best in the business and can get early wickets for the team with the new ball.
Even Liam Livingstone and Krunal Pandya are quite experienced and can play an important part during the middle overs.
RCB continues to reinvent itself every season and we think its overseas picks for IPL 2025, particularly Salt, Livingstone, and David will end up making it very dangerous to come across. Oh, and of course, there is a little-known player called Virat Kohli hungry for his first IPL title as well.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad were the surprise package of last year as after three years of poor performances, they finished as the runners-up.
SRH blew away the opposition with their aggressive batting last year and will look to do the same this season as well. Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Heinrich Klaasen were among the fastest-scoring batsmen last year and have all been retained in the squad. SRH has also brought in Ishan Kishan, Sachin Baby, and Atharva Taide has only strengthened their batting.
The Sunrisers have a well-rounded pace line-up consisting of veterans Pat Cummins, Mohammed Shami, Harshal Patel, and Jaydev Unadkat. They will be supported by young talents Eshan Malinga and Wiaan Mulder. While the Sunrisers lack variety in its spin department, they do have Rahul Chahar and Adam Zampa who are quite capable and can single-handedly turn the match in the team’s favor.
The team with the most explosive batting lineup has only gotten stronger. Heinrich Klaasen, Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Nitesh Rana now have Ishaan Kishan and Abhishek Manohar as well! Pat Cummins is now joined by a fit again Mohammad Shami making SRH perhaps the most dangerous team in IPL 2025.
As seen in this article, the upcoming edition promises to be a rollercoaster ride with plenty of thrilling encounters. We are bound to see some excellent bowling and swashbuckling batting through the entire two-month duration of the tournament.
