Shubman Gill Health Update

The fans were pretty disappointed to see Shubhman Gill miss out on India’s opening fixture against Australia on Sunday. The youngster was suffering from a high fever upon landing in Chennai last week and was diagnosed with dengue and has been under medical observation ever since.

Shubhman Gill is the leading run-scorer in ODIs during this calendar year, scoring 1230 runs at a scintillating average of 72.35. He has scored 5 centuries and 5 half-centuries in the process and has an excellent strike rate of 105.03. In his absence, India’s top-order batting suffered a collapse against Australia's potent seam attack. However, a timely partnership between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul ensured that the hosts started their campaign on a winning note.

While the team management, including coach Rahul Dravid, was pretty confident of Gill’s swift recovery, things haven’t panned out as expected. His platelet count dropped down to almost 70,000 per microliter. While his condition wasn’t alarming, it is a standard procedure to admit an individual to a medical facility once the count drops below 1,00,000. The doctors admitted him as a `precautionary measure´, and discharged him 24 hours later. Upon returning to the hotel, he has been resting and recovering. All the other procedures, including administering glucose, are being done at the hotel itself. However, he hasn’t travelled to Delhi where team India is set to take on Afghanistan on Wednesday as BCCI wasn’t keen on allowing him to travel needlessly. Also, it would have meant consulting a new doctor, and the team management didn’t want that to happen.

Will Shubman Gill play against Pakistan?

While Shubhman Gill is on the road to recovery, a bout of dengue infection tends to leave the body weak, even for a fit athlete, for days after the blood tests return negative. This means that Gill has been effectively ruled out of Saturday’s marquee clash against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Shubhman Gill is likely to be replaced by Ishan Kishan in the opening slot. The aggressive southpaw was quite impressive in the middle order during the recent Asia Cup fixture against Pakistan. However, with him now moving up the order, Kishan will need to make some adjustments to his batting style as he takes on the new ball. In case of a rather unfortunate scenario where Gill could be unavailable for a longer duration, the team selectors might be forced to look further and bring in a more stable replacement in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad or Yashasvi Jaiswal.
