WTC Final 2023 - Prediction and Tips

The World Test Championship ( Source: Wikipedia) Final 2023 is shaping up to be a classic contest between two of the best test teams in the world. Australia and India have both been in excellent form in recent months, and both teams have many world-class players in their ranks.

Australia has a strong batting line-up led by Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. They also have several experienced bowlers, including Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

India is the #1 Test team globally and will be confident of winning the final. They have a strong batting line-up led by Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. They also have many talented spinners, including Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

The match will be played at The Oval, a good batting surface. However, the Dukes ball will swing and seam, making it difficult for the batsmen. The team that wins the toss will have a significant advantage, as they can choose to bat first and set a target for the opposition.

Here are some WTC tips for the match:

  • Australia should look to bat first and set a big target for India.
  • India should focus on building partnerships and scoring runs at a steady pace.
  • The bowlers will be key in both teams, and they will need to be able to take wickets and keep the runs down.
  • The match will be played in England, so the weather could play a factor.

For the upcoming match, Rohit Sharma will assume the captaincy for the Indian Test side, while Pat Cummins will lead the Australian team.

In the context of Tests held at the Kennington Oval, Australia has secured victory in 7 out of a total of 38 matches against England. At the same time, India has emerged triumphant in 2 out of 14 Tests against the same opponent.

It is noteworthy that Australia and India have never encountered each other in a Test match at any neutral venue. Throughout their cricketing history, they have engaged in 106 Test matches, with Australia holding the upper hand with 44 victories, while India has emerged victorious in 32 matches.

WTC Final - Date and Venue

The WTC Final 2023 will be played from 7 to 11 June 2023 at The Oval, London, England. The match will be between Australia and India, which qualified as the top two teams in the league stage of the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship.

The match will be a five-day Test match, with each team batting and fielding twice. The team with the most runs at the end of the match will be declared the winner.

WTC Final 2023 - Pitch Report

The pitch at The Oval is known to be a sound batting track, with a brownish tinge and an even bounce. Pacers might get some movement off the pitch in the initial overs of the innings, but overall, the pitch is considered suitable for batting.

The weather in London in June is usually mild and sunny, with occasional showers. This should make for good playing conditions, with no significant disruptions due to weather.

The teams that bat first at The Oval have a good record, winning 60% of the time. This suggests that the toss could be a decisive factor in the match.

Overall, the pitch at The Oval is a good batting track, with some assistance for the bowlers early on. The weather is expected to be good, and the toss could be decisive.

WTC Betting Tips

India odds to win WTC Final 2023

India is currently available at 2.62 at Betway to win the match. This makes it the clear underdog and we think this is largely because of the fact that the match is being played in England.

Australia odds to win WTC Final 2023

Australia is priced at 1.90 at Betway to win the match, or just about even. This a price that is quite conservative and it is clear that the bookmakers are hedging their bets. Australia’s bowling attack is very strong and that is the reason why it starts as the favorite to win.

The top two teams in the points table at the end of the tournament will compete in the WTC final. The tournament is scheduled to run from July 2021 to June 2023, and each team will play six series - three at home and three away.

Australia is the current leader in the points table, having won 11 of their 19 Tests. India is in second place, having won 9 of their 17 Tests.

WTC Final Teams Previews

India

India will play its second consecutive WTC Final and will once again go in as the underdog. It will miss its best fast-bowler (Jasprit Bumrah), the first-choice wicketkeeper, the most prolific Test batter (Rishab Pant), and several other key members of the squad due to injury.

Take into account that India is going to be playing away from home in conditions that are traditionally not to its liking and you can see why winning the WTC title is going to be an uphill task.

However, India is far from a pushover and its record away from home has far improved in recent years.

Strengths: Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj will lead India’s WTC bowling attack and both of these bowlers are in prime form. Capable of getting seam movement and bowling with high pace, they will be key to India’s success.

The fact that Pujara has been playing in England for well over a month should also be seen as a strength for India.

Weaknesses: India’s batting order normally takes some time to get used to the conditions. They will also have to switch over from the IPL style of playing to Test cricket, not an easy task. A weak third fast bowler, an unproven wicketkeeper-batter, and insufficient time to get used to the conditions can all be seen as weaknesses for India heading into the WTC Final 2023.

Recent Form: India has been doing very well in Test cricket but it has also largely played in home conditions (or in Bangladesh) over the last couple of years. It did draw its last series in England 2-2, though.

WTC Final Squad India

The Indian Test squad for the WTC 2023 is a commanding force led by captain Rohit Sharma. The team comprises a skilled roster of established players and rising stars, representing the rich cricketing talent of the nation.

Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishan Kishan, KS Bharat (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat

Top 3 Batters

Cheteshwar Pujara

Pujara’s overall record is a bit poor in England. He only averages 29.60 after 29 innings and has just one century to his name. He has been playing in county cricket for quite some time now and will probably be the best-prepared batter from India.

He has three fifties in his previous five innings played in England so he seems to be getting better in the conditions. He also loves batting against Australia.

Ravindra Jadeja

Yes, Ravindra Jadeja. We have not made a mistake by putting his name in the batters to watch out for! Jadeja has been among India’s best three batters in Test cricket for a while now. He bats with patience, is comfortable against both pace and spin and can also score quickly when needed.

He scored a century in Birmingham when India toured England in 2022 and we can certainly see him playing a vital role for India at number 6 or 7.

Ajinkya Rahane

IPL 2023 has been a sort of second coming for Ajinkya Rahane. He has scored runs in Indian domestic cricket before that but this was where he got all the limelight again. Drafted into the Indian side as an injury replacement, Rahane is excellent against pace and will enjoy the conditions in England.

We expect him to play freely and take the attack to the bowlers. If there is one player that has the technique to succeed, that's Ajinkya Rahane.

Top 3 Bowlers

Mohammad Shami

One of the best exponents of seam bowling around the world, Shami is often quite unlucky in that the results do not reflect how well he bowls. Catches are dropped or batters get beaten but do not edge the ball.

Things have a tendency to equalize, though and with the confidence of being the leading wicket taker of IPL 223 behind his back, a fully-fit Mohammad Shami is going to be a real handful for the Australian batters to counter.

Mohammad Siraj

A brilliant match-winning five-wicket haul at Lords against England in 2022 will instill the belief in Mohammad Siraj that he can repeat such a performance in the WTC Finals. He is a vastly improved bowler in all formats and can be India’s spearhead.

He is very good against the left-handers, of which Australia has plenty, and also gets some reverse swing when the ball gets older.

R Ashwin

We think India will end up playing Ashwin in this match because of his fantastic record against the left-handers. Keep in mind that Ashwin was brilliant against Australia when India travelled there last year and picked up wickets in unhelpful conditions.

The Oval has a tradition of being spin-friendly in a final couple of days and also offers extra bounce that Ashwin can use.

Australia

There is something about Australia when it comes to ICC events. It almost always seems to rise to the occasion and brings its best. This time, it comes into the WTC Final as the favourite, the world’s number one ranked team, and in seam-friendly conditions where it thrives.

Australia’s best Test players have been in England for quite some time getting used to the conditions while most of its leading bowlers are well-rested. Is Australia winning a foregone conclusion, then?

Far from it. If there is one team in the world that has troubled Australia in all conditions then that is India. The traditional weakness of Australian fast bowlers against seam bowling is well-established, and English conditions could expose that.

Strengths

A well-settled bowling unit with plenty of depth. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood, Mitchell Starc, and Scott Boland are all world-class. Any three of these could walk into any playing eleven in the world.

Nathan Lyon and Cameron Green round out what is one of the best test attacks worldwide and certainly the most experienced as a unit.

Weaknesses

Australia’s batting is strong on paper but it can be exposed. There is a bit too much dependence on Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne in this lineup. We also think Australia is not very good against spin and could find facing Ashwin and/or Jadeja very tricky if the pitch starts to offer them any help.

Recent Form

Australia’s recent form has been fantastic. Wins against South Africa, West Indies, and Pakistan have allowed it to secure the number one ranking. Its only loss came against India in a series that it fought well but eventually fell short.

WTC final squad Australia

The Australian Test squad for the WTC 2023 showcases a formidable lineup of talented cricketers. The team is led by captain Pat Cummins, comprising experienced players and promising newcomers, embodying the nation's strong cricketing tradition.

Pat Cummins (C), Steve Smith (VC), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Matthew Renshaw, Mitchell Starc, David Warner.

Top 3 Batters

Steve Smith

No conversation can start about Australia’s batting without talking about Steve Smith. He averaged nearly 110 when he last played in England he also loves playing against India. There has been some talk that he is a bit out of form, and his recent outings in County Cricket for Sussex have also not been very productive.

However, his position at number is crucial, and the runs he gets will dictate how Australia ends up performing in the WTC Final.

Marnus Labuschagne

The World’s number-one ranked batter, Marnus Labuschagne, loves playing against India. He averages 47.20 against them, which has fallen a bit after the tour to India. In conditions where seam bowling dominates, Labuschagne is at his best.

He is perhaps at the peak of his powers and can be seen as ready for the throne from his idol, Steve Smith.

Cameron Green

Green has been playing in the IPL and would not have had much time to get used to the conditions in England. That still does not mean he is any less dangerous. Batting at number six gives him the advantage of being protected from the new ball. He will bat when the pitch is a bit slower, and the bowlers are a bit tired.

He also has the license to attack on most occasions. He may be Australia’s most valuable player in this series (and the Ashes to follow).

Top 3 Bowlers

Pat Cummins

Currently, the second-ranked fast bowler in the world, Pat Cummins, has had a long layoff from cricket for personal reasons. This would have allowed him to recuperate and come into this match at his best.

Is there a more skilled bowler in world cricket? We don’t think so. He is effective in various conditions, has a genuine pace, and can use the old ball very well. He is also extremely experienced and has tasted success against most Indian batters.

Scott Boland

There is a chance that Boland will play in the WTC Final ahead of Josh Hazelwood/Mitchell Starc.

If there is a venue where Boland should feature in the playing eleven, then that is England. He is immaculate with his line and length at all times. He also gets just enough movement to trouble the batters and take edges.

A record-breaking start to his career has slowed down after the Indian tour, but he will be looking for revenge in English conditions.

Nathan Lyon

The GOAT as he is affectionately called, Nathan Lyon, has more wickets than any other spinner in the world (R Ashwin being a close second). He has also played more Test matches in England than anyone else in this series.

Lyon’s record in England is average, but he was brilliant against India in the previous series he played. The extra bounce is his friend, and if the pitch starts turning, then expect Lyon to be the main threat for Australia in the second inning.
