There is a slight element of risk attached to this bet. The reasoning for taking this bet on would be if Sri Lanka were to take a cautious approach to start their innings, they could lose an early wicket from being tentative at the crease. New Zealand will either start off with the tricky pace of Lockie Ferguson or early seam movement from Jacob Duffy. Either bowler may cause issues in the first over.
This would be another bet that comes with its risks, but may be worth a punt. New Zealand’s opening batters could decide to take the game on from the get-go. The powerplay restrictions for the first six overs mean taking the aerial option in the first over could be profitable to the batters. The New Zealand openers may also be looking to pounce on an inexperienced Sri Lankan new-ball bowling attack.
This game will be an intriguing battle between the Black Caps’ batting depth and the spin prowess of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana. With two new skippers at the helm, both will have the chance to test their leadership in a must-win game. A T20I series draw, or win will be on the line. Both teams are looking to start afresh after disappointing T20 World Cup campaigns.
Each of them looks to be building their new-look teams with a few changes, but have maintained a core group of successful T20 players.
The visiting side have held the upper hand over Sri Lanka in T20Is over recent head-to-heads. Granted, most of those matches have been played in Trans-Tasman conditions. The subcontinental conditions will be an interesting leveller in a strength versus strength game.
Overall, the record in Sri Lanka reads New Zealand with four wins, Sri Lanka with three wins and one no result.
This will be the second T20I of the series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand and is scheduled for Sunday, 10 November 2024. Indian fans can catch the live stream on the FanCode app.
If Sri Lanka manage a win in this second T20I, they will be on a two T20I series unbeaten streak which would give their fans promising signs that they are a T20I team on the rise again.
Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando will be an aggressive opening pair looking to kick the game into gear. Kusal Mendis will be the glue of the innings with his textbook batting techniques. Charith Asalanka's captaincy and explosive batting complements players like Bhanuka Rajapaksa who will also provide fireworks after the powerplay.
Dinesh Chandimal's wicketkeeping provides solidity behind the stumps, but equally, he will be a calm presence for Sri Lanka with the bat.
Sri Lanka relies on spin to win with a bowling attack spearheaded by Wanindu Hasaranga's all-round capabilities and Maheesh Theekshana's guile with the spinning ball. Much will depend on captain Asalanka’s tactical changes with the bowling and making sure he uses the correct bowlers when necessary, in the fast-paced nature of T20 cricket.
Asitha Fernando will add a seam-bowling threat when he has new ball in hand. Matheesha Pathirana's pace and unique Malinga-like action could outfox a couple of Kiwi batters. Nuwan Thushara will be a useful addition to the fast-bowling unit if included. He has been a popular pick in T20 leagues globally.
This will be the Black Caps first T20I assignment since their T20 World Cup campaign finished. Going unbeaten or winning the series would show progress in their group and an ability to bounce back.
Tim Robinson may be given a chance to open the batting in a bid to gain more T20 experience internationally. Alongside him will be Henry Nicholls who has dabbled with opportunities in T20I cricket here and there.
For the most part, Nicholls has had to settle for a seat on the bench behind players like Martin Guptill, Tom Latham and Devon Conway. He will relish the opportunity to show his best in a high-stakes game. The powerful Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips are arguably the two most important batters to the Black Caps lineup because of their experience in the LPL.
Mitchell Santner will be tested to the fullest in a game which will be series defining. He will be vital alongside Ish Sodhi to utilise the spinning subcontinent bowling conditions. The pace battery will consist of the experienced Lockie Ferguson’s lightning-fast bowling and backed up by Jacob Duffy’s swing bowling as well as the potential for newcomer Nathan Smith to be involved.
They will have a decent variety of bowlers to choose from, but will need to stand their ground against the hosts’ explosive batting lineup.
It may come as no surprise if both captains will be in favour of bowling first. This game will also be played under the floodlights as a night game. Gripping the ball and fielding on a dampish outfield will be difficult. Bowling first also proved to be the favourite choice at the toss at Dambulla in the Lanka Premier League.
Dambulla's pitch tends to be slower and lower than most. That will be music to the ears of Sri Lanka’s off-spin and leg-spin duo. Ish Sodhi could also play a role in containing the opposition batters in spinning conditions. The conditions in the early evening could assist the seamers with lateral movement on offer in the powerplay. The dew factor at night could affect the bowlers struggling to grip the ball easily and fielders picking up the ball cleanly. Both of the last two results between the teams had the chasing team winning.
Dambulla is expected to face a 37 percent chance of rain at the start of the match. Temperatures will be over 30 degrees Celsius and extremely humid at 76 percent. Scattered showers are expected throughout the day.
Sri Lanka have two of the world’s best limited-overs spinners in Hasaranga and Theekshana. They will have a tall task on their hands when they take on the middle overs duties against a long and strong New Zealand batting lineup.
Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips will be returning to familiar conditions after stints with the Dambulla Sixers and Colombo Strikers earlier this year. They will be two key batters to watch. New Zealand will be pushing for a team performance which has often been their strength.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Kusal Mendis put on strong performances in the 2024 LPL Final and will be eager to do so again in national colours.
Bet on Sri Lanka to win.
