Both teams managed totals of 30 runs or more after the first five overs in the opening ODI. This shows that they will be presented with a decent batting track to start off with and can use that to pounce on run-scoring opportunities. Given the evidence of the previous match, this could be a decent bet.
Two out of the previous three matches at Pallekele have seen less than 15 wickets fall. The batting form from both teams suggests that this might be a good bet to make for this match.
The Sri Lankans made full use of home advantage in game one. Their batting was on point when Kusal Mendis hit 143 runs off 128 balls and Avishka Fernando hit exactly 100 runs off 115 balls. They backed that up with scalping nine of the visitors’ wickets inside a game reduced to 27 overs. New Zealand will need to improve to challenge Sri Lanka.
The Black Caps current record in the last five ODIs still makes for good reading despite the loss. They may need a different batting approach to the middle and death overs to put Sri Lanka under pressure.
The positive for Sri Lanka was their 45-run DLS Method win in the first ODI of this series. That arguably could be the best indicator of what to expect for the rest of the series. New Zealand, however, have won all of the four ODI fixtures against Sri Lanka before that.
This second ODI at Pallekele International cricket Stadium is scheduled for Sunday, 17 November 2024. Indian viewers can watch Sri Lanka vs New Zealand on the FanCode app for live streaming.
The Sri Lankans will know they have a fantastic chance to chip away at their recent poor ODI form. They will take an unassailable lead in the series if they win this match.
The opening duo of Avishka Fernando and Pathum Nissanka promises to provide a blistering start. Fernando's aggressive style and Nissanka's technical prowess make them a formidable duo. Kusal Mendis, donning the wicketkeeping gloves, brings stability and firepower to the top-order.
Fernando and Mendis were both centurions in Dambulla. Besides his role as captain, Charith Asalanka has contributed with 380 runs in his last ten ODIs and nine wickets in his last nine ODIs.
Sadeera Samarawickrama and Janith Liyanage are expected to provide the necessary impetus in the middle overs. Kamindu Mendis's all-round capabilities add depth to the batting lineup and useful part-time overs of spin.
Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay form a potent spin duo. Vandersay, in particular, has grabbed ten wickets in his last four games. Dilshan Madushanka's pace and Asitha Fernando's swing will test the opposition's top-order in the powerplay. Madushanka took three wickets in the first ODI.
New Zealand is set to lock horns with the Sri Lankans in an electrifying contest which is do or die for this ODI series. Mitchell Santner will be tested in his leadership role as he attempts to keep the series alive with a win in Pallekele.
The opening duo of Will Young and Tim Robinson is expected to provide a flying start again. Both openers made starts of 48 and 35 runs respectively previously. The Black Caps will require those to be converted into half-centuries, if not more significant scores.
Henry Nicholls's experience and Glenn Phillips's explosive potential make them a formidable middle-order pair. Mark Chapman's versatility adds depth to the batting lineup.
Michael Bracewell's ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a valuable all-rounder. Mitchell Hay's glovework and lower-order hitting will be crucial in finishing off innings. He will look to make his mark internationally.
Santner's left-arm spin will look to suffocate opposition batting, complemented by Ish Sodhi's leg-spin guile. Nathan Smith's pace and Jacob Duffy's swing will look to be a sterner test for the opposition's top-order batting. Duffy took three wickets in his previous ODI
The previous match of the series resulted in Sri Lanka choosing to bat first. This may suit their strengths which have been in the batting department while also giving their spinners the opportunity to go to work later in the day. New Zealand may also want to show their improvements with the bat in the first innings.
The Pallekele International Cricket Stadium pitch is known for its competitive nature for the batters and spinners alike. The pitch may initially support the fast bowlers with the swinging new ball, but as the pitch dries out, expect the spinners to take control. Sri Lanka scored over 320 runs in their first innings of the first ODI which almost lasted 50 overs.
Any score above 260 runs in 50 overs could make for a thrilling contest.
The weather at Pallekele will largely be fine in the morning. If there is going to be rain, it may occur during the late afternoon in the form of showers at a 46 percent chance of rain. The players can expect hot and humid temperatures.
Much of the praise for the win in Dambulla went to the Sri Lankan bowlers after their phenomenal effort to almost bowl their visitors out. They did so even without their talisman leg-spin bowling all-rounder of Wanindu Hasaranga. Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando also deserve credit for rescuing the innings after being rocked early.
Bet on the Sri Lanka to win.
